Hutchinson Community College sophomore Saquan Singleton became the first 2020 Blue Dragon men's basketball sophomore to sign, choosing the University of New Mexico to continue his basketball and academic career.
A 6-foot-6 sophomore from the Bronx, New York, Singleton was Hutchinson's leading rebounder, assist and steals leader and was the Blue Dragons fifth-leading scorer. Singleton ranked in the KJCCC's statistical Top 20 in seven different categories.
Singleton is the second Blue Dragon to sign with the Lobos' men's basketball program. The first was Vladamir McCrary in 1990.
Singleton was a key member 2019-20 Blue Dragons, which finished 23-9 and tied for third in the Jayhawk West this season. The Blue Dragons were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the Region VI Tournament in March. He was a first-team All-Jayhawk West and second-team All-Region VI second-team performer this past season.
The Blue Dragon sophomore averaged 11.8 points per game while shooting 54.4 percent from the field. He averaged a team-high 7.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.5 steals with 30 total blocked shots in 30.8 minutes per game.
Singleton ranked third in assists, sixth in the league in rebounding, ninth in minutes played, 13th in field-goal percentage, 15th in blocked shots and 16th in steals.
Singleton posted a triple-double of 14 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists against NEO on November 12. He also had three other double-doubles this season. Singleton had three games of 12 or more rebounds.
Singleton's 156 assists this season were 10th most in Blue Dragon single-season history. His 260 career assists are sixth most in Hutchinson history.
Singleton is the 35th Blue Dragon to sign with a Division I program since head coach Steve Eck took over the 2009-10 season. He is the 44th overall Blue Dragon to be signed in the Eck era.
