The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team squares off against the Garden City Broncbusters for the second time this season on Saturday in the Sports Arena.
Game time for the Jayhawk West matchup will be at 4 p.m. (changed from the original start time of 7:30 p.m.).
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) at 3:50 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will also be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 3:50 p.m.
Hutchinson plays its first Saturday home matinée since March 1, 2008.
The Blue Dragons come into Saturday's game after suffering through another late-game loss on Wednesday. The Dragons led by 18 points in the first half at Northwest Tech before dropping a 105-102 overtime decision to the Mavericks.
Sophomore D.J. Mitchell scored a career-high 31 points to lead a Blue Dragon team that shot 52.9 percent for the game, but the Mavericks were unstoppable in the second half and overtime. The Mavericks hit 11 3-pointers and shot 62.5 percent for the game, the first time in 30 years the Blue Dragons allowed an opponent to shoot 60 percent or better since 1990.
Garden City got off to a great start to the 2019-20 season, going 7-3 in its first 10 games. Since dropping a 94-81 decision at Allen on November 30, the Broncbusters have gone 1-13 since. Garden City enters Saturday's matchup with six-straight losses after an 85-73 loss to Seward County on Wednesday in Garden City.
Back on January 15, the Blue Dragons needed a strong second half to put Garden City away in a 91-72 win at Conestoga Arena in Garden City. The Blue Dragons led 42-39 at halftime and outscored the Broncbusters 49-33 in the second half to snap a two-game losing streak to the Broncbusters.
Josh Baker nailed 5 of 7 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Blue Dragons in the first meeting with the Busters. The Blue Dragons shot 52.5 percent with nine 3-pointers, getting 16 points from Tyler Brown, 13 from Saquan Singleton and 12 from Clarence King. Tahlik Chavez had 23 points to lead Garden City.
Saturday's showdown will be the 186th in a series that has been continuous since 1929. The Blue Dragons own a 136-49 all-time record against Garden City, including 73-10 overall in games played in Hutchinson and 60-8 in games played at the Sports Arena. Garden City defeated Hutchinson 70-69 in the Sports Arena last season.
Hutchinson is currently in fourth place in the Jayhawk West, one game behind third-place Pratt and one game ahead of fifth-place Seward County.
