GREAT BEND – The early-season trend of a balanced scoring attack for the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team continued on Friday at the Best Western/Cougar Booster Club Classic at the Barton Gym on Friday.
Two Blue Dragons scored 20 or more points, five scored in double figures and the team shot better than 53 percent as No. 9 Hutchinson rolled by Spring Creek Academy 111-83.
The Blue Dragons are now 4-0, 2-0 on a current five-game road trip, heading into Saturday's 3 p.m. showdown against Redlands Community College in Great Bend.
Hutchinson rolled up a season-high offensive point total for the second-straight game by shooting 53.5 percent from the field (38 of 71). The Dragons shot 56.7 percent (17 of 30) in the second half.
Freshman D.J. Mitchell led five Blue Dragons scoring in double figures with 21 points off the bench. Mitchell made 6 of 10 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and was 8 of 10 from the foul line.
Sophomore guard Chris Giles scored a career-high 20 points on 7 of 9 shooting, going 2 of 3 from 3-point range. He added four assists.
Freshman center Fred Odhiambo posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Odhiambo also had four blocked shots. Odhiambo was a perfect 6 of 6 shooting.
Sophomore James Rojas finished with 17 points and sophomore Rheaquone Taylor had 10 points. Saquan Singleton added eight points and six assists. Tyler Brown hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points.
The Blue Dragons were out-rebounded for the first time this season, 42-41, but limited the turnovers to 12, while forcing 22 Spartan turnovers.
Hutchinson held Spring Creek to 36.4 percent shooting in building a 55-31 lead at halftime. The Dragons put an exclamation point on a dominant first half when Singleton dropped a perfect pass to Odhiambo for a dunk just before the first-half buzzer.
The Blue Dragons allowed Spring Creek to shoot 44.7 percent (17 of 38) in the second half, which included six 3-pointers, as Hutch outscored Spring Creek 56-52 in the final 20 minutes.
Tyrus Ben Johnson had 23 points to lead Spring Creek. Donald Ray Garrett had 18 points and Elijah Bishop added 16 points.
