The No. 9-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team continues its early-season five game road trip this season at the Best Western Angus Inn-Cougar Booster Club Basketball Classic at Barton Community College in Great Bend.
The Blue Dragons will face Spring Creek Academy at 3 p.m. on Friday and Redlands Community College at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Barton Gym. Spring Creek is a prep school much like Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita. Redlands is located in El Reno, Oklahoma.
Both games will be broadcast live on KWBW-AM/FM radio (1450/98.5) with Rusty Hilst and Steve Carpenter calling the action on Friday and Glen Grunwald doing the play-by-play honors on Saturday. Both teams will also be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Networks. Airtimes both days are at 2:50 p.m.
The Blue Dragons are 3-0 and started the five-game road trip with a 109-68 win on Tuesday at NOC-Enid.
The young Blue Dragons – Hutch has only three sophomores on the roster – are averaging 92.0 points per game and are shooting 48.2 percent from the floor. On Tuesday against NOC-Enid, the Dragons poured in a season-high 12 3-pointers. Defensively, Hutchinson is allowing 61.3 points, 34.4 percent overall shooting and 26.4 percent from 3-point range.
The Blue Dragons have been balanced with six players averaging in double figures through three games.
Sophomore James Rojas is averaging 15.0 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field. Chris Giles and D.J. Mitchell are averaging 11.7 points, while Rheaquone Taylor is at 11.0 points per game. Boubacar Kamissoko averages 1.8 points and Malique Jacobs is at 10.0 points per game.
The Dragons are averaging 50.0 total rebounds and 16.0 offensive rebounds per game. They are also a plus-9.3 in turnovers ratio, forcing 21 miscues per game.
Spring Creek will have an international player to it when the Spartans meet Hutch on Friday. The Spring Creek roster has players from Australia, Nigeria, Cameroon and Tanisia listed. The Spartans also have players from Texas, Georgia and Ohio on the roster.
The Spartans will be a tall team with six players listed at 6 feet, 7 inches or taller.
Redlands (0-2) has had its defensive issues through two games. The Cougars lost to Garden City 98-78 and then lost a shootout with Strength 'N Motion International 122-114 on Tuesday.
The Cougars are allowing 110 points per game and opponents are shooting a staggering 58 percent from the floor.
Sophomore guard A.J. McNeil is off to a hot start at 25.0 points per game shooting 51.4 percent through two games. Freshman guard Damion Thornton is at 17.0 points per game and Tanner Meraz is at 11.0 points per game
