The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team gets to spend some quality time at home starting Saturday night.
The No. 8 Blue Dragons play host to the Dodge City Conquistadors at 7:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena. The game will be the first of four-straight games for Hutchinson at the Sports Arena, where it is 7-0 this season.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:20 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (play-by-play) and Rusty Hilst (analysis) calling the action. The game will also be videostreamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 7:20 p.m.
The Blue Dragons have been solid at home averaging 92.6 points per game. The Dragons shoot 50.5 percent overall and 35.8 percent from 3-point range at home this season. Hutch also averages 50 rebounds per game and is plus 18.4 in rebound margin. Defensively, Hutch is allowing 62.1 points per game with opponents shooting only 33.3 percent in seven games so far.
Hutchinson starts the homestand after a come-from-behind 76-74 victory on Wednesday at Independence. Sophomore Devonte Bandoo had a career-high for the second-straight game with 26 points on 5 of 5 3-point shooting. Bandoo is 10 of his last 12 3-point attempts.
Sophomore Kai Mitchell got the game-winner with a three-point play that gave Hutch a 76-74 lead with 10.2 seconds remaining in the game. Mitchell played a big role with 10 points, six rebounds and six assists. Mitchell has become a strong passer with a Hutchinson high for forwards/centers at 2.8 assists per contest.
Dodge City has lost nine games in a row, but the Conquistadors aren't getting routinely blown out of games. During the streak, four of the losses are by less than 10 points and the largest margin was 18 points. The Conquistadors lost 70-64 to Seward County on Wednesday.
The Conquistadors are averaging 78.6 points per game offensively and 79.9 points defensively.
Tajae Anderson is Dodge City's leading scorer at 11.8 points per game. Justice Dixon is at 10.3 points per game.
Saturday's game completes the first half of the Jayhawk Conference season for both Hutchinson and Dodge City.
