A former Blue Dragon player, DeMarcus Roberson returns to Hutchinson Community College as the defensive line coach and the assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Roberson played for the Blue Dragons in 2005 for then-head coach Craig Jersild.

He recorded 48 tackles as a linebacker with the Blue Dragons and had a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown against Highland in that season.

Roberson returns to Hutchinson after coaching three seasons at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia, where he was co-defensive coordinator and linebackers’ coach.

Fork Union went 24-3 over those three seasons, going undefeated in 2021. While at Fork Union, Roberson guided players to Division I programs at East Carolina, Wake Forest and Buffalo University.

Previous to Fork Union, Roberson was the linebackers coach at Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville, North Carolina.

Roberson helped guide that program to a 20-10 record from 2016 to 2018 and helped that program reach the North Carolina state playoffs for the first time since 1965. Roberson mentored several all-conference linebackers in his tenure at Bartlett Yancey.

Roberson’s first coaching job came in 2015 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was the assistant defensive line coach and was part of the weight-room staff.

After finishing up at Hutchinson, Roberson moved on to Shaw University as a linebacker and defensive lineman in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Roberson was a two-time team captain in a program that captured three CIAA conference championships and posted a 34-4 three-season record in Roberson’s playing time there. He earned second-team All-CIAA honors and was a four-time league defensive player of the week and earn one national player of the week honor.

One of the most notable plays of Roberson’s career at Shaw came when he blocked a potential game-winning field goal against Fayetteville State in a game where Shaw rallied to win in overtime on October 15, 2011.

Roberson played professionally for two seasons as a defensive lineman for the Colorado Ice indoor football team.

Before coming to Hutchinson, Roberson played at Fork Union Military Academy where he was the team defensive MVP and led the team in tackles in 2004. Also, while at Fork Union, Roberson was part of a state championship lacrosse team at Fork Union.

Roberson graduated from Fork Union in 2005 and earned his bachelors of science degree in recreational management from Shaw University in 2014.

Roberson and his wife, Cynthia, have two children – Zakiya Cagle (21) and Zaquan Cagle (19) – and one grandchild – Elyni Jones (6 months).
