The football coaching lineage at Hutchinson Community College runs deep from legends who made their name right here in Hutch to those who have made a successful jump to four-year programs.
Charles Sesher and John Matous are forever etched in Blue Dragon lore as the programs top-two winningest coaches.
Sesher, who also coached men’s basketball at Hutchinson, won a program-best 115 games over 21 seasons and guided the Blue Dragons to their first bowl victory in team history with a victory in the 1947 Salt Bowl. Sesher still ranks third in the Jayhawk Conference in overall wins.
Matous won 97 games in his 15-year tenure, winning Jayhawk Conference titles in 1969 and 1974.
Sesher and Matous are the only coaches in program history to lead the Dragons to undefeated seasons in 1947 and 1969, respectively.
As for those who moved on, Steve Logan was head coach at East Carolina, while Sam Pittman (North Carolina), Andy Hill (Missouri) and David Wheeler (Central Arkansas) were all a part of the Blue Dragon success of the 1990s.
From 2007 to 1019, the Blue Dragon sideline was led by former Hutch player Rion Rhoades reached No. 2 in career wins (99), No. 3 in winning percentage (.664) and third in games coached (149). He look the linebackers' coaching position at Arkansas for former Blue Dragon head coach Sam Pittman
Drew Dallas is the 18th head coach in Blue Dragon history, hired on Dec. 31, 2019.
