The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team broke open a tie game with 23 points over a span of 4 minutes, 22 seconds in the second quarter to defeat No. 11 Dodge City 46-10 on Saturday at Gowans Stadium in a battle of the top two teams in the Jayhawk Conference.
The Blue Dragons start a season 6-0 for the third time in the last four seasons and for the eighth time in program history. Hutchinson takes over sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk Conference with a 3-0 record after its seventh-consecutive victory over the Conquistadors. The Blue Dragons have their second bye week next Saturday and play host to Garden City on October 21 in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Gowans Stadium. Dodge City is 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the KJCCC.
Tied at 3-3 after one quarter, the Blue Dragons had Dodge City pinned back at the Conquistador 1. Dodge City decided to take a safety after the punter purposely stepped out of the back of the end zone for a 5-3 Hutchinson lead with 10:01 to play in the second period.
After the free kick, the Dragons needed four plays to cover 55 yards. Jake Parker hit Oran Singleton for a 31-yard touchdown pass for a 12-3 lead with 8:50 to play.
A pair of Malik McConico second-period interceptions set up two more Dragon scored in the second-quarter explosion. The first McConico interception was capped by a Tyrell Reed Jr. 5-yard touchdown run for a 19-3 lead with 6:54 left in the half. Reed also cashed in on McConico's second interception of the quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run for a 26-3 lead with 5:39 remaining in the period.
The Blue Dragons closed out a 26-point second quarter when Nestus Burger kicked a school-record 50-yard field goal with 2:13 left in the period for a 29-3 lead. Burger broke the old record of Sebastian Garcia, who had a 48-yard field goal against Fort Scott in 2018.
Burger wasn't the only Blue Dragon kicker to enter the record book on Saturday.
All-American sophomore Cole Segraves kicked two field goals to give him 20 career field goals and surpass Luke Niemeyer as the Blue Dragon career field-goal record-holder. Segraves kicked a 33 yarder in the first quarter and kicked a career-long 46-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Reed had his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, going for 115 yards on 10 carries with a season-high four touchdowns of 5, 6, 22 and 71 yards. Reed is the first Blue Dragon running back with four rushing touchdowns in one game since B.J. Emmons against Garden City on September 16, 2017.
Making his second start of the season at quarterback, Parker was 11 of 25 for 156 yards with a touchdown and interception. Parker also rushed for 23 yards.
Singleton had four receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown. Tristan Smith had three catches for 32 yards.
The Blue Dragons out-gained Dodge City 345-218. Hutchinson had 189 rushing yards and 156 passing yards. Hutchinson held Dodge City to 218 total yards, limiting the Conquistadors to 159 passing yards and just 59 rushing yards.
The Blue Dragons had six quarterback sacks and forced three takeaways – McConico's two interceptions and a Walter Bob Jr. fumble recovery.
Jakari Foster had a career-high eight tackles. Daniel Brown, the nation's leader in quarterback sacks, had a single-game career high three sacks. Brown, Bob and Cody Hawks had seven tackles each.
Hutchinson and Dodge City traded field goals in the first quarter – Segraves had 33-yarder with 11:54 to play in the period and Angel Dominguez kicked a 37-yarder with 2:23 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Blue Dragons out-gained Dodge City 144-17 in their 26-point second quarter to lead 29-3 at halftime.
Hutchinson took a 36-3 lead after Reed's 22-yard touchdown run with 12:34 to play in the third quarter.
Segraves' career-long 46-yard field goal with 12:33 left in the fourth quarter made it 39-3. Dodge City scored its only touchdown when Stone Wilson scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 4:49 to play. Just 1:26 later, Reed scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 71-yard touchdown run fir a 46-10 lead with 3:23 to play in the game.
GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 53-36-4 all-time against Dodge City, including 28-14-2 in games played in Hutchinson. … The seven-straight wins against Dodge City tie a series record for winning streaks for the Dragons. … Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas is now 16-2 against ranked teams. … With 11 points scored on Saturday, Cole Segraves jumps to seventh on the Blue Dragon career scoring list with 137 points. … Segraves is now tied with Kassidy Lemmons, Luke Niemeyer and C.J.
