Hutchinson CC Sports Information

Despite a one-hour weather delay last week, the Drew Dallas era got off to a great start for the Hutchinson Community College football team after a 33-10 season-opening victory over the Coffeyville Red Ravens.

For Dallas and the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons, they go from one Jayhawk Conference Blue Blood to another with a Saturday road trip to El Dorado to play the Butler Grizzlies in a 7 p.m. kickoff at BG Products Veterans Memorial Stadium.

This will be the 97th all-time meeting between the two Jayhawk Conference rivals in a series that dates back to 1929. The Blue Dragons look to even the all-time series. Hutchinson is 47-48-1 all-time against Butler.

The Blue Dragons out-gained Coffeyville 411-205 in last week's season opener, rolling up 276 yards on the ground. Redshirt freshman quarterback C.J. Ogbonna had 215 total yards and two touchdowns. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. Ogbonna also ran for a 30-yard touchdown and 79 yards on seven carries.

Defensively, the Dragons limited Coffeyville to only 76 yards passing. Despite giving up two long drives, the defense stepped up, especially in the first half with Coffeyville driving toward a potential game-tying score. Trey Pinkney and Davion Westmoreland combined for a quarterback sack and force the Ravens to a short field goal.

The Grizzlies, who were No. 7 in the NJCAA Preseason Rankings, started their season on the road and dropped a 31-24 heartbreaker to No. 9 Independence in Independence.

Butler was down 17-0 after the first quarter and 17-3 at halftime before scoring three third-quarter touchdowns and took a 24-17 lead with 3:18 to play in the third on a Darius Lassiter 28-yard touchdown reception. The Pirates tied the game on the final play of the third quarter and took a 31-24 lea on Tavion Thomas's third touchdown of the game with 47 seconds left. The Grizzlies drove to the Independence 35 when time ran out.

The Blue Dragons look for their first three-game winning streak over the Grizzlies since the 1994 and 1995 seasons. Hutchinson defeated Butler 27-13 in El Dorado in 2018 and 35-27 last season at Gowans Stadium in a battle of the No. 1 (Hutchinson) and No. 2 teams in the NJCAA Rankings.

In between the two Hutch streaks, the Grizzlies had won 27 of 29 games.
