Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The Hutchinson Community College football team looks to extend a five-game winning streak and maintain its share of first place in the Jayhawk Conference with a second-straight road test on Saturday.

The No. 4 Blue Dragons (7-1) meet the Dodge City Conquistadors (3-5) in a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister station KWBW-AM (1450) beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff. Rusty Hilst (play-by-play), Daren Dunn (analysis) and Randy McKay (sidelines) will call the action. The game will also be videostreamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network with the link available at 12:50 p.m.

With a defensive-led 24-14 victory at Coffeyville last week, the Blue Dragons moved to 5-0 in the Jayhawk Conference, the best start in the league since 2014. No. 2 Garden City is also unbeaten in league play at 4-0. The Broncbusters play host to Highland on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons will try to re-ignite a passing offense that has had some big plays, but strives for the consistency it was showing before the Highland game. The Dragons have passed for just 108 yards per game in wins over Highland and Coffeyville. In the four previous games, the Dragons hit opposing defense for 244.5 yards per game.

The Dragons continue to be the No. 2 rushing team in the Jayhawk and No. 17 team in the NJCAA in at 194.0 yards per game. Dezmon Jackson, who is the back-to-back Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Week award winner, Is No. 16 in the NJCAA at 91.2 yards per game. Last week against Coffeyville, Jackson had 10 rushes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, including a 90-yard scoring run which tied for the second-longest run from scrimmage in team history.

Dodge City has had a roller-coaster season with big wins over Ellsworth and a last-second come-from-behind win over Coffeyville before getting derailed last week at Iowa Central with a 58-7 loss.

Still, the Conquistadors are a dangerous team, especially offensively with the third-best scoring offense (31.5 points per game), which averages 326.1 yards per game. The Conqs are allowing 34.3 points and 352.6 yards per game.

Hutch will have a bye week next Saturday before the showdown with Garden City on November 3 at Gowans Stadium.
