Former Blue Dragon baseball and football player Matt Jones is in his second season with the Hutchinson Community College baseball coaching staff.

Originally from Gretna, Nebraska and a University of Nebraska baseball signee, Jones attended Hutchinson Community College in 2014. He was then drafted in the 25th round of the 2014 Major League Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After a four-year minor league career, Jones returned to Hutchinson to play football in 2018. Jones completed his football eligibility at Midwestern State University in 2019.

Previous to his coaching tenure with the Blue Dragons, Jones was an assistant coach at Iowa Western Community College in the fall of 2021 and before that, he was a graduate assistant at Central Oklahoma University in 2020. Jones also was an assistant coach with the Hutchinson Monarchs summer collegiate team that finished third in the NBC World Series in 2020.

In his one season with the Blue Dragon Baseball team, Jones hit .372 with 10 home runs and 53 RBIs. Jones had 67 total hits with 11 doubles and one triple. He had a .611 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage, which was fourth in the NJCAA. He led the nation and became the Blue Dragons’ single-season leader in hit by pitches with 40.

As a punter for the Blue Dragon football team in 2018, Jones averaged 36.4 yards per punt on 70 attempts with a long of 59 yards. Jones had seven punts of 50-plus yards and landed 21 inside the 20-yard line. Jones’ 2,547 punt yards is a Blue Dragon single-season record.

Jones was an All-Jayhawk Conference honorable mention baseball selection in 2014 and an all-KJCCC honorable mention punter in 2018.
