Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The Hutchinson Community College baseball team begins its quest for its first Region VI championship since 2010 on Thursday.

The Blue Dragons will play the Highland Scotties in the opening game of the Region VI Hutchinson Sub-Regional at Noon Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field. Allen (31-17) and Colby (26-23) will play Game 2 at 3:30 p.m. An elimination game between the opening-round losers will take place at 7 p.m.

The sub-regional was moved up a day because of the potential for rain this weekend. The Overland Park and Arkansas City sub-regionals followed suit. The Liberal sub-region will start on Friday after Brent Gould Field is still trying out from rain last weekend.

The four sub-regional winners will play next week at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina in the super-regional.

The Blue Dragons would like the progression of the last two Region VI Tournament to continue. The Blue Dragons finished third in the 2018 Region VI Tournament and made their first tournament finals appearance in nine seasons in 2019. The 2020 Region VI Tournament was wiped out.

The Dragons enter the 2020 postseason 4-1 in their last five games.

Hutchinson has already set a new season record for home runs with 94 this season. The Blue Dragons hit 17 in a four-game series against Dodge City.

The Dragons are hitting .320 as a team and are averaging 9.5 runs per game.

Third baseman Austin Callahan is hitting .433 with 21 home runs and 70 RBIs – all three stats are team highs this season. Ben McLaughlin is hitting .433.

The Dragons have a team ERA of 6.29. Probable Game 1 starter Zach Firmature is 8-3 with a 4.71 ERA. Sammy Sanchez is 8-2 with a 2.62 ERA. Tyler Delong is 6-0 with five saves and a 2.20 ERA.

The Scotties are hitting .282 as a team and have 60 home runs this season. The Scotties have a team ERA of 10.37. Justin Carinsi is Highland's top hitter with a .400 batting average. Gustavo Nava leads with 10 home runs. Joan is 1-4 with a 6.62 ERA,

Hutchinson did not play Highland this season and hasn't met the Scotties in the postseason since 2012. The Scotties finished eighth in the Jayhawk East this season.

The Blue Dragons didn't play the Allen Red Devils either. The last postseason meeting between the Blue Dragons and Red Devils was the losers' bracket final of the Overland Park sub-regional in 2010, a game won by the Dragons in extra innings.

The Dragons lost 3 out of 4 games to Colby this season, getting swept at Hobart-Detter Field and splitting a doubleheader in Colby.
