Hutchinson CC Sports Information
There was an early-season indication of what kind of season Zane Schmidt might have. He tied a single-game Blue Dragon record with three doubles against Northeast Texas on February 15.
There would be other single-game records matched during what became a Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player season for the 5-foot-10, 175-pound freshman designated hitter from Kearney, Nebraska.
Schmidt earned another postseason honor on Tuesday by being named a first-team NJCAA All-American for 2019.
Schmidt becomes the 14th Blue Dragon player to earn All-America honors and is the third first-team All-American, joining Michael Helman (2017) and Kyle Simonds (2014) in that exclusive club.

When the all-Jayhawk West and all-Region VI teams were announced in Many, Schmidt became Hutchinson's second league MVP in the past three seasons and third under head coach Ryan Schmidt – Helman in 2017 and Jake Schleppenbach in 2014). Schmidt was Hutch's first league Freshman of the Year since Caden Doga in 2017.
Schmidt posted team highs with a .392 batting average, 22 home runs and 75 runs batted in. He also had 16 doubles, five triples, 40 walks, a .775 slugging percentage and .479 on-base percentage.
Schmidt led the Jayhawk Conference – both east and west divisions – in total hits (94), home runs and total bases (186). He was second in the league in RBIs and fourth in runs scores (73). Schmidt led the NJCAA in total bases, second in home runs, third in total hits and seventh in RBIs at the time these postseason awards were released.
Of all the big games Schmidt had this season – he had 27 multi-hit games and 20 multi-RBI games – March 28 vs. Garden City at Hobart-Detter Field stands out. Schmidt hit three home runs and drove in six runs in a come-from-behind 8-7 victory. Schmidt's third home run was a walk-off two-run shot to center. Schmidt tied single-game records for home runs and 12 total bases. His six RBIs tied for sixth most in team history. Schmidt was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week for that week's performance.
Schmidt's 43 extra-base hits this season tied a school record with Doga (2017). He was second on the single-season charts for home runs, RBIs and total bases. He was third in total hits and fourth in runs scored.
Schmidt's 22 home runs rank in a tie for seventh place on Hutch's career home run list.
Schmidt is one of three Jayhawk Conference players named to the 2019 NJCAA first team. Schmidt joins Cowley catcher Cody Milligan and Johnson County outfielder Anthony Amicangelo. Colby third baseman Matt Coutney was a second-team selection and Colby pitcher Logan Hoffman was a third-team selection.
Earlier this month, Schmidt announced on Twitter that he will sign with Texas A&M.
