BLUE DRAGONS COMPLETE SWEEP OF STERLING JV

Two more strong overall pitching performances and home runs from Logan Sartori, Will Reetz and Zane Schmidt highlighted a pair of Hutchinson Community College Baseball victories over the Sterling College Junior Varsity, completing a four-game sweep on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

Jake Bunz, Matt Hopkins and Ethan Peterson combined for a four-hit shutout in a 10-0 mercy-rule win in five innings. Reetz and Schmidt homered and the Blue Dragons used five pitchers in an 11-3 victory in Game 2.

The Blue Dragons extended their current win streak to six teams and improve to a season-high 11 games over .500 at 24-13. Hutchinson returns to action on Tuesday in Edmond, Oklahoma, for a neutral site matchup against Seminole State before turning to Jayhawk West play next Thursday at Pratt.

Over the course of four games in the series, Blue Dragon pitchers combined for a streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings. The Warriors scored only five runs and managed 11 hits in the four games.

GAME 1 RECAP
Hutchinson posted its second-straight shutout as Bunz, Hopkins and Peterson mowed through the Warriors. Bunz (6-1) earned the win with two innings of scoreless work with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Hopkins allowed three hits and struck out two in two innings. Peterson walked one and struck out the side in the fifth.

The Blue Dragons stole a team season high seven bases – Sartori had four, Jeremiah Ceasar had two and Mason Lowe had one. That speed led to two runs in the bottom of the first.

Hutchinson finally broke the game open with five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Sartori hit a three-run home run in the fifth to push the game to the mercy rule in the fifth.

The Blue Dragons had just eight hits, but they took advantage of seven walks and two hit batters to pull away.

Ceasar had his second-straight multi-hit game going 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI with two stolen bases. Satori was 2 for 2 with four RBIs and three runs scored. He was 4 for 4 stealing bases. Lowe was 2 for 3 with a run and stolen base.

GAME 2 RECAP
The top four batters in the Hutchinson order – Ceasar, Reetz, Schmidt and Dylan Nedved – were a combined 11 for 12 with eight RBIs and nine runs scored.

Hutchinson scored all 11 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Nedved had a three-run triple in Hutchinson's four-run third inning. Zion Bowlin had an RBI double and Schmidt launched a three-run home run in a five-run fourth. Reetz hit a two-run home run in the fifth.

Ceasar completed a tremendous series – he was 8 for 12 in three games played in the series – going 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Reetz went 3 for 4 with a double and homer with two runs and three RBIs. Schmidt hit his league-leading 14th home run in going 3 for 3 with three RBIs. Nedved was 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs.

The Blue Dragons had a series high 14 total hits in the series finale.

Miguel Reyes started and worked two scoreless innings with five strikeouts and two hits allowed. Ryan Summers (5-1) earned the victory with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Matt Delcambre allowed three runs with four walks and two strikeouts. Cameron Crandal pitched a perfect sixth with two strikeouts and Zach Firmature fanned all three Sterling batters he faced.
