Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College baseball team scored multiple runs in five different innings on Friday and about needed almost all of them.
The No. 20 Blue Dragons had season highs for runs scored and hits, which compensated for 14 free baserunners as Hutchinson defeated Northeast Texas 18-14 on Friday in the first game of a three-game series with the Lions.
Hutchinson improves to 3-2 overall, while Northeast Texas slips to 2-5. Game 2 of the series will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Freshman Will Reetz was a perfect 4 for 4 with four runs scored and a run batted in. Reetz had a pair of doubles.
Freshman designated hitter Zane Schmidt had a huge day going 3 for 5 with three doubles and a season-high five RBIs. Schmidt had a two-run double in the fourth, an RBI double in the sixth and a two-run double in the eighth.
Sophomore Logan Sartori had his second three-hit game of the season, going 3 for 5 with four RBIs and a stolen base.
Sophomore Max McGuire hit his first Blue Dragon home run, a three-run shot in the top of the second to left field to give Hutch a 3-1 lead.
Five Blue Dragon pitchers allowed 14 hits and nine walks. The Dragons also committed five errors which led eight unearned runs.
Miguel Reyes started and worked four innings for a no decision. Reyes allowed six hits, four runs, two earned with two strikeouts and three walks.
Jake Bunz (1-0) was credited with the win after 2 2-3 innings. He had five strikeouts, but allowed four hits and two earned runs.
Zach Firmature worked one scoreless inning with no strikeouts and two walks. Ethan Peterson two runs in 2-3 inning. Dylan Nedved worked the final 2-3 inning to finish off the victory. Dragon pitchers worked only two scoreless innings.
The Blue Dragons led 3-2 after three innings when they exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth. Nedved had a sacrifice fly, Schmidt drove in two runs with a double and Sartori singled to make it 7-2. Northeast cut the Dragon lead to 7-5 after five innings.
Hutch scored three two-out runs in the top of the sixth to make it 10-5. Nedved, Schmidt and Sartori all had RBI hits. Schmidt's two-run double in the seventh made it 13-5. Northeast came back to cut the Dragon lead to 13-8 after seven innings.
The Blue Dragons added five more two-out runs in the eighth. Jeremiah Ceasar had a two-run double. Sartori also had a two-run single and Ethan White scored on a wild pitch to make it 18-8.
The Eagles scored four runs in the eighth and loaded the bases with one out. Two more scored to make it 18-14, but Nedved recorded a strikeout to end the game.
