PRATT – Freshman Dylan Nedved and sophomore Julian Rip tied Blue Dragon single-game records as the Hutchinson Community College baseball team completed a Jayhawk West sweep of the Pratt Beavers on Sunday at Stanion Field in Pratt.
Hutchinson defeated Pratt 18-8 and 20-4 on Sunday to extend its winning streak to nine games.
The Blue Dragons reach the 30-win plateau for the fifth-straight season and for the 25th time in program history. The Dragons improve to 31-17 overall and are 17-11.
Hutchinson is now alone in third place in the Jayhawk West, one game behind Butler for second play, one game ahead of Colby for third place and two games ahead of Cloud County. The Blue Dragons travel to Redlands on Tuesday before opening the final Jayhawk West series of the season on Thursday at Seward County.
Hutchinson outscored Pratt 57-15 in the four-game series. The Blue Dragons have won 18-straight games over the Beavers taking back to the 2014 season.
Nedved tied two Blue Dragon single-game records in the second game on Sunday. He went 5 for 5 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored and five runs batted in. Nedved was the first Blue Dragon with five hits since Bobby Morgensen last season against Dodge City. The five hits tie for the second-most in single-game history. Nedved is the ninth player to have five or more hits in a game in team history. His 12 total bases tied Michael Helman, who had 12 against Independence in 2016. His four runs scored tied a single-game record.
Rip tied a single-game record with three doubles in a 3 for 5 performance in the first game on Sunday. He is the first Blue Dragon with three doubles in a game since Shane Cooper in 2016. He is the sixth Blue Dragon in team history with three doubles in a game.
With a single in Game 1 and a home run in Game 2, sophomore Brock Schaffer extended his hitting streak to 15 games. That is the fifth-longest hitting streak in team history.
Hutchinson's 20-run output in the second game was the fourth time this season to score 20 or more points.
The Blue Dragons combined for 40 total hits, including nine doubles, two triples and nine home runs.
GAME 1 RECAP
Wyatt Divis and Zach Baxley both hit two home runs and Riley Metzger had another to lead a 21-hit attack in the first game. Divis' two-run home run in the first got the scoring onslaught going. Baxley's second home run, which came in the third inning, helped the Blue Dragons quickly erase a 5-4 deficit.
Each Blue Dragon starter had at least one hit and five had three-hit games.
Divis went 3 for 5 with two home runs, three runs scored and four RBIs. Divis is now fifth on the Blue Dragon career home run chart with 23 career homers.
Baxley went 3 for 4 with his first career two-home run game. He drove in a career-best four runs and scored a pair.
Logan Sartori had a double and triple in a 3-for-5 game with three runs and two RBIs. Metzger also went 3 for 5 with a homer and two driven in.
Starter Miguel Reyes Jr., started and lasted only two-plus innings with five hits and six earned runs allowed. Zach Philbin (2-1) worked three innings in relief to earn the win. Philbin allowed four hits and two runs with two strikeouts. Dayden Lane worked the final two innings without allowing a run and with two strikeouts. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
GAME 2 RECAP
Pratt led 2-1 after one inning, but that lead was quickly wiped out with a two-run Nedved home run and a two-run Schaffer blast in a five-run second inning.
In addition to Nedved's 5-for-5 hitting performance, Rip continued his hot hitting going 3 for 5 with a double and a home run.
Divis went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Morgensen went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Baxley and Zion Bowling added two hits in a 19-hit Blue Dragon attack,
Morgensen moved past Thad Weber (2005-06) into seventh place on the Hutch career hits list. Now with 130 career RBIs, Morgensen is fourth on that career list and is five RBIs away from surpassing Caden Doga's record of 134.
Divis was the winning pitcher in Game 2. Now 3-1, Divis worked five innings allowing five hits, two unearned runs and had five strikeouts
