DRAGONS FALL IN 5 IN REGIONAL OPENER

Middle blockers Anna Dean and McKenzie Murphy both had career-high nights for kills, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team was upset in the opening round of the Region VI Division I Volleyball Tournament.

The second-seeded Blue Dragons were upset by seventh-seed Dodge City 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 12-15 on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons' season ends at 24-15.

Dean pounded down a career-high 18 kills on .481 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. Dean finished with five block assist and five digs. Dean finished with 162 total blocks for the season, which is 12th on Hutchinson's single-season blocks list. Dean's 273 career total blocks are eighth-most on program history.

Murphy had a career-high 13 kills on .357 hitting. She had a solo block and four block assists Murphy had eight kills on nine attacks in the fourth set alone.

Sophomore Taniya Golden had 11 kills and 14 digs for her 19th double-double of the season. Golden finished her Blue Dragon career with 552 kills this season (fourth on the Hutchinson single-season list) and with 971 career kills (second most in team history).

Sophomore Alejandra Briseno had 10 kills and a career-high 20 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

Sophomore setter Giovanna Ravanhani had 46 assists and posted her eighth double-double with five kills, 10 digs and five total blocks. Ravanhani finished fifth on the Blue Dragon single-season assist list with 1,265 and seventh in career assists with 1,664.

Freshman libero Isabella Rollandini finished with 10 assists.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit by Dodge City .194-.190, but the Dragons had 60 kills to the Conquistadors' 58. The Dragons had a 12-10 block advantage but were out-dig 81-74.

Beatriz Cornachini had a match-high 22 kills on .246 hitting to lead Dodge City. Tess De Zanet and Agnes Hegardt had 12 kills each.

The Blue Dragons were 6-4 this season in five-set matches.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons scored on 10 of the match's first 13 rallies. The Dragons saw the lead dwindle to 13-10 after a block. Back-to-back kills by Briseno and Dean gave the Dragons a 20-16 lead. Dodge City scored four in a row to tie the set at 20. Briseno's kill stopped the run to grab the lead back. A Dean kill gave the Dragons a 22-21 lead. Dodge City scored the final four points of the set to take the opener, 25-22.

SET 2: The Dragons hit .316 in the second set and held Dodge City to .189. The Dragons scored the first three points of the set and never relinquished the lead. Tied at 8-8, A Dean kill gave the Dragons the lead for good and sparked a small 3-1 run for a Ravanhani kill for a 12-9 lead. Leading 13-12, the Dragons went on a 5-0 run to lead 18-12 after a Dodge attack error. Dodge City got the lead down to four at 24-20, but a Ravanhani dump for kill on set point gave Hutchinson a 25-20 win and a tied match.

SET 3: Hutchinson led 5-0 and 7-1 to start the set. The Dragons wound up hitting just .100 in the set as Dodge City clawed its way back into the match. The Dragons led 16-15 after a Dean kill. Dodge City went on a 4-0 run. Dodge City led 18-17 and closed the set on a 7-4 run. The Conquistadors hit .143 in the set.

SET 4: Murphy's eight fourth-set kills led the Blue Dragons to .424 hitting and the Dragons sided out at 75 percent in the fourth set. Dodge City was held to .192 hitting. Tied at 4-all, the Dragons went on a 7-1 run to lead 11-5 after a Golden service ace. The Dragon lead grew to eight at 15-7 after a Conq attack error and to nine at 17-9 on a Ravanhani kill. Back-to-back Murphy kills helped the Dragons double up Dodge City at 20-10. Dean's kill on set point gave the Dragons a 25-16 victory and forced a fifth set.

SET 5: Dodge City flew out to a 7-1 lead to star the set. A pair of Golden kills cut the Dragon deficit to 7-3. Trailing 9-5, Dodge City went on a 5-1 run to lead 14-6. The Dragons fought off six match points against to pull within 14-12. Cornachini finally completed the upset on match-point No. 7.
