GREAT BEND – Two points away from a first-set victory on Saturday night at Barton in their bid for a share of the Jayhawk Conference lead, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team wound up dropping a three-set match to No. 19 Barton.

The Cougars scored the final seven points of the opening set and went on for a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 victory over the Blue Dragons at the Barton Gym.

Hutchinson fell to 23-14 overall and 9-5 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons close out the regular season at 1 p.m. on Monday against Butler. Barton clinched the conference title outright with the victory and improved to 24-5 overall and 13-3 in league play.

The Blue Dragons hit .239 for the match, but struggled by siding out only at 48 percent. The Dragons also had a season-low two blocks. Barton hit .254 and sided out at 55 percent. The Cougars had six blocks and nine service aces.

Sophomore Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with 14 kills and hit .286 on 42 attacks. Golden added seven digs and her 51st service ace of the season.

Sophomore Anna Dean hit .474 with 10 kills on 19 attacks. Sophomore Alejandra Briseno had six kills and eight digs.

Sophomore setter Giovanna Ravanhani finished with 31 assists and seven digs.

Freshman libero Isabella Rollandini had 13 digs.

Phoebe Reyes had 12 kills on .526 hitting to lead Barton.

Set 1: Hutchinson trailed 14-10, but got a Golden kill and two McKenzie Murphy kills to pull within 14-13. Then trailing 17-15, the Blue Dragons got a double block from Murphy and Emma Stubbs to spark a 7-0 run to lead 22-17 after an Ashlyn Long kill on a Barton overpass. Leading 23-18, but Blue Dragons weren't able to side out as Barton scored the final seven points of the set to stun the Dragons 25-23.

Set 2: Barton jumped out to a 7-2 lead. A Dean kill pulled the Dragons within 10-7. Trailing 13-10, Dean and Golden had kills on Briseno had an ace to pull Hutchinson within 13-12. Barton had a 4-0 run to open an 18-13 lead. The Dragons had a 3-0 run on kills from Briseno, Dean and Golden to pull with 24-22, but Barton closed out the set to take a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3: Barton used a 5-1 run to start the third set. The Dragons had runs of 3-0 and 4-0 to pull within 10-7. The Blue Dragons never got over the jump. A 4-0 run gave Barton a 23-17 lead. Hutchinson went on a late 4-1 run to trail 24-20. The Dragons ultimately fell 25-21.
