COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team started the Dennis South Memorial Tournament with a win and a loss on Friday at Reiver Arena.

The Blue Dragons defeated Monroe College 25-19, 21-25, 29-27, 25-19 to open play on Friday. The Dragons then jumped out to a 2-0 lead on tournament host Iowa Western, but dropped a five-set nail-biter to the Reivers 25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 18-25, 13-15.

Now 21-13, the Blue Dragons play Missouri State-West Plains at 9 a.m. on Saturday to close out the tournament.

MONROE RECAP
After the teams split the first two sets, the Blue Dragons held Monroe to .141 hitting over the final two sets and Hutchinson snapped a three-match losing streak with a four-set victory.

The Blue Dragons hit .218 for the match and out-blocked Monday 14-9.

Sophomores Taniya Golden and Anna Dean had 12 kills each to lead the Blue Dragons.

Dean hit .550 for the match. She also had a career-high six service aces and five block assists.

Golden hit .214 and had nine digs.

Freshman McKenzie Murphy finished with eight kills on .462 hitting with five total blocks, including three solo blocks.

Sophomore Ashlyn Long had six kills. Freshman Emma Stubbs had season highs of six kills and four blocks.

Sophomore setter Giovanna Ravanahani had 38 assists with four block assists and four digs. Freshman libero Alondra Velez tied a season high with 16 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Isabella Rollandini had 10 digs.

IOWA WESTERN RECAP
Stubbs set a new season high for kills for a second-straight match with 14 kills on .278 hitting. She added two service aces.

Golden finished with 12 kills. Dean had nine kills and Long had eight kills.

Dean had four blocks against the Reivers. Murphy had three blocks.

Velez tied her season high with 16 digs. Rollandini had 14 digs.

Ravanhani had 42 assists.

The Blue Dragons are now 4-3 in five-set matches. This is the second time the Dragons have dropped a five-set match after leading 2-0 in the match.
