PARK HILLS, Missouri – Day 2 of the Mineral Area College Tournament started off great for the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team, which won the first two sets with Vincennes University in decisive fashion.

But the Blue Dragon offense went quiet in the final three sets and Hutchinson fell in five sets 25-17, 25-11, 21-25, 21-25, 9-15 to the Trailblazers.

The Blue Dragons hit .314 in the first two sets and combined for 27 kills. Hutchinson hit .063 and had a combined 33 kills and had 22 attack errors in the final three sets.

Three players reached double figure kills for the Blue Dragons led by Taniya Golden's 13 kills. Golden had her team-high 17th double-double with 14 digs. She added four total blocks.

Sophomore Anna Dean finished with 12 kills and five blocks. She added a service ace. Sophomore Alejandra Briseno had 11 kills. Freshman McKenzie Murphy finished with eight kills and five blocks.

Sophomore setter Giovanna Ravanhani had her sixth double-double of the season with 40 assists and 13 digs. She added a kill and three block assists.

Freshman libero Isabella Rollandini had 21 digs and two aces. Freshman defensive specialist Alondra Velez finished with 10 digs.

The Blue Dragons are now 4-2 in five-set matches this season.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons had a balanced offense with four players combining for 12 kills and the Dragons recorded five blocks in the opening set. Down 9-8, Dean had a block and two kills in a 5-0 run that gave the Dragons a 13-9 lead. A Dean/Ravanhani double block upped the Hutchinson lead to 17-10. Briseno had a back-row kill for a 20-13 lead and Briseno had a kill on set point for a 25-17 victory.

SET 2: Golden and Murphy teamed up for a block to give the Dragons a 6-1 lead. Then back-to-back Blazer attack errors aided a 4-0 Dragon run and Hutchinson led 11-4. The Blue Dragons sided out on 10 of 11 opportunities and won one of their most dominant sets of the season. The Dragons doubled-up Vincennes at 18-9 after a Golden kill. Then leading 21-11, the Dragons closed the set with a 4-0 run on a Murphy kill, VI attack error, Rollandini ace serve and Dean solo block for a 25-11 win.

SET 3: Vincennes came out hot in the third set and built a 14-6 lead. The Dragons started to steer the ship in the right direction with a 4-0 run that was capped by a Dean/Golden double block. After a timeout, the Blazers countered with a 4-0 run and ultimately a 9-3 run to lead 23-13. The Blue Dragons won 8 of the next 9 rallies to pull within 24-21, but the Blazers closed out the set win on the fourth set point, winning 25-21.

SET 4: Back-to-back Dean kills gave the Dragons an early 9-5 lead. Then leading 12-8, VI scored on 4 of the next five rallies to pull within 13-12. Vincennes eventually took a 19-18 lead. The Dragons tied the set at 19 on a Dean kill. The Blazers finished the set on a 6-2 run for a 25-21 win, knotting the match at 2-2.

SET 5: Vincennes jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the crossover and the Dragons never fully recovered. Trailing 10-5, the Dragons pulled with in two points on back-to-back Blazer attack errors and a Ravanhani ace serve. A Golden kill pulled the Dragons within 11-9, but Vincennes scored the final four points of the match to complete the comeback.
