PARK HILLS, Missouri – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earned its first victory over a nationally ranked opponent with a four-set victory over No. 16 Indian Hills to open the Mineral Area College Tournament on Friday.

Led by a combined 28 kills and 12 total blocks from sophomores Taniya Golden and Anna Dean, the Blue Dragons dropped the first set to the Warriors, but rallied the next three sets to win 22-25, 25020, 27-25, 25-18 at Sechrest Gym.

The Blue Dragons won their third match in a row and improved to 19-6 overall. Hutchinson is 1-1 against Indian Hills this season.

Hutchinson is now 1-5 against nationally ranked opponents this season.

Golden posted her 16th double-double of the season against Indian Hills with 17 kills and 13 digs.

Dean finished with 11 kills, seven blocks and three ace serves.

Sophomore Alejandra Briseno had seven of her 10 kills with nine digs.

Sophomore setter Giovanna Ravanhani finished with 38 assists, nine digs, three aces and a kill.

Freshman libero Isabella Rollandini had 15 digs and freshman defensive specialist Alondra Velez had nine digs.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit by Indian Hills 55-51, but out-blocked the Warriors 12-8 and had nine service aces. Indian Hills had 27 attack errors and 13 service errors. The Blue Dragons had 13 attack errors and seven service errors.

Set 1: The Blue Dragons shot out to a 5-0 lead, but the Warriors, but the Warriors scored on 5 of the next 7 rallies to pull with 7-5. Golden had seven kills in the first set, but Indian Hills kept chipping away and eventually took a 16-14 lead. A Golden ace tied the set at 15 and a Dean kill gave the Dragons an 18-17 lead, but Indian Hills went on a 6-2 run to take a 23-20 lead. The Dragons scored three straight with a Golden kill, Dean ace and Golden solo block. Indian Hills won the set, though, 25-23.

Set 2: A Dean solo block gave the Blue Dragons an early 8-4 lead. Then leading 11-8, the Dragons went on a 5-0 run that was capped by a Callie Muff kill on an over-pass for a 16-8 lead. Another Muff kill on a Warrior over-pass gave the Dragons a 19-10 lead. A Golden kill pushed the lead to 21-11, but the Warriors went on a 6-1 run to pull within 22-16 and eventually 24-20, but a Golden kill gave the Dragons the set and tie the match at 1-1.

Set 3: The third set featured 15 ties and 10 lead changes. Hutchinson trailed 17-15, but went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-17 lead after an Indian Hills attack error. The Warriors countered with a 5-1 run to take a 22-21 lead after a double block, but surrendered that lead with a service error. Dean's second solo block of the match gave the Dragons a 23-22 lead. The Dragons had their first set point at 24-23 on a Briseno kill. Tied at 25, Dean had a kill and a Golden/McKenzie Murphy double block closed out the set for a 27-25 win. Indian Hills had 10 attack errors to Hutchinson's four.

Set 4: Tied at 4-all, a Golden kill gave the Blue Dragons the lead for good. Hutchinson sided out on 15 of 18 opportunities in the fourth set. Leading 11-10, a Murphy kill, Briseno ace and Ashlyn Long kill upped the lead to 14-11. Leading 17-15, the Dragons pushed the lead out to five with a Briseno kill, a Ravanhani/Dean double block and a Warrior attack error. A Murphy kill on a quick set to the middle ended the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.
