BLUE DRAGONS REACH 25-WIN MARK AFTER SWEEP OF COUGARS

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team earned a Jayhawk West sweep of the Barton Cougars on Wednesday night and reached the 25-win plateau for the first time since 2017.

Freshman Taniya Golden posted a double-double and the Blue Dragons held Barton to .113 hitting as Hutchinson defeated the Cougars 25-16, 27-25, 25-17 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons completed the first season sweep of the Cougars since 2017.

Hutchinson improved to 25-10 overall and 12-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons complete the regular season on Friday with a trip to Butler. The Blue Dragons can finish no worse than third in the Jayhawk West and has a chance to finish second in the league.

Golden led the Blue Dragons with her second double-double of the season with a match-high 13 kills and 12 digs. Golden hit .216 on 37 attacks. She also had a season-high three service aces. Now with 373 kills for the season, Golden moved past Thais Franca for fifth place on the Blue Dragon freshman list for kills.

Sophomore Baylee Miller finished with 11 kills on .310 hitting with a season-high five blocks, four digs and one ace.

Freshman Anna Dean had 10 kills on .529 hitting. She had seven total blocks, including one solo stuff.

The Blue Dragons hit .179 as a team. The Dragons out-blocked the Cougars 10-7 and out-dug the Blue Dragons 55-50.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano finished with 22 assists and nine digs. Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 13 assists.

Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey had 15 digs to lead the Dragons. Harvey has eight matches with 15 or more digs this season.

Molly Norris had nine kills and Tasiah Nunnery had seven kills to lead Barton, which had 24 kills on .113 hitting.

SET 1: The Dragons jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a Harvey ace and Barton attack error. A Cougar block cut the Dragon lead to 10-7. A Golden kill pushed the Dragon lead back to five at 14-9. Golden dropped an ace to boost the Dragon lead to 17-10. The Dragons led by as many as 10 points in the second. Golden's fourth kill of the set came on set point. The Dragons outhit the Cougars .185-.000.

SET 2: The Cougars had three early two-point leads. Hutchinson finally tied the set at 12 on a Blondie Penaflor service ace. The Dragons looked to be pulling away when a Miller kill gave Hutchinson a 20-17 lead. With Hutchinson leading 23-21, Barton scored three in a row and had a set point at 24-23, but the Dragons stayed alive with a Cougar service error. The Dragons fought off two set points against. Miller's kill tied the set at 25-all and the Cougars were called for a ball-handling error and Dean closed the set with a solo block.

SET 3: The Cougars led 4-1, but a 10-point Harvey service run helped the Dragons take control of the set. A Dean kill capped the run with an 11-4 lead. Leading 12-7, the Dragons went on a 7-1 run to lead 20-9 after a Golden kill. The Cougars got back within seven points, but Dean had a kill on Hutchinson's second match point to complete the sweep.
