HAWKINS BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN BLUE DRAGON DEBUT

Blue Dragon freshman Brooke Hawkins broke the Blue Dragon indoor triple jump record and qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, winning the event on Saturday at the Washburn Rust Buster Classic.

TOPEKA – Freshman Brooke Hawkins had a memorable debut for the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team on Saturday at the Washburn Rust Buster Classic at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.

Hawkins broke a school record, earned a spot in the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Championship and was an event winner on Saturday.

The Blue Dragon freshman won the Rust Buster triple jump, breaking a 21-year-old Blue Dragon record with a jump of 38 feet, 8 3/4 inches, which is also a national qualifying jump. Hawkins broke the 2001 record of 38-4 1/2 set by Alicia Dansby.

Hawkins had two other Top 10 performances on Saturday. She placed fifth in the high jump clearing 5 feet, 3 inches, which ties for the ninth-highest indoor high jump in Blue Dragon history. Hawkins was eighth in the long jump at 17-5 1/2 (5.32m).

Sophomore Liberty Limon posted two Top 10 finishes on Saturday. She finished ninth in the triple jump with a top jump of 33-5 1/4 (10.19m). She was 10th in the high jump after clearing 4-11.

There were three other Blue Dragon all-time Top 10 performances posted on Saturday.

Freshman Kamisha Williams-Dominique finished 15th in the 200 meters, running the third-fastest Blue Dragon 200 indoor time of 25.95 seconds.

Sophomore Taylor Hoskinson posted a PR and the third-best Mile run time in Blue Dragon history of 5:23.83. Sophomore Ellie Van Zelfden had the eighth-fastest Mile run time Saturday with a mark of 5:35.08.

The Blue Dragons will split the team next week and compete at both the Wichita State Herm Wilson Invitational and the Pittsburg State Classic.
