The No. 11-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team missed on a pair of first-half scoring chances and No. 16 Kansas City took full advantage in a key Jayhawk Conference matchup on Sophomore Night at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Scoreless at halftime, Kansas City's Sierra Montez registered the game's only goal as the Blue Devils defeated the Blue Dragons 1-0 Wednesday, KCK's first-ever win at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons slip to 12-3-3 overall and 9-3-3 (30 points) in the Jayhawk Conference. Still in second place, the Dragons can still earn a share of the league crown with a victory next Monday at Cowley and two Barton losses to Garden City and Seward County.

The Blue Dragons have locked up a Region VI Tournament opening-round game, which will be played on Sunday, October 29.

Hutchinson out-played Kansas City in the first half, outshooting the Blue Devils 17-7 overall and 6-0 in shots on goal. Adriana Delgado fired one off the cross ball and KCK keeper Karli Angle made six first-half saves.

The Devils looked to be taking a 1-0 lead in the first half, but sophomore defender Kendra Brungardt kept the game scoreless. After Dragon keeper Karsyn Slothower went to play a ball to her left, the ball got deflected right in front of a defenseless goal. Brungardt rushed in and legally blocked the ball and the Dragons cleared to keep the game scoreless.

KCK turned up the pressure on the ball in the second half and limited the Dragons to just four shots taken.

The Blue Devils scored in the 61st minute when Jaycee Schumann drove the ball right of the goal to the end line and passed to a wide-open Montez, who blistered a shot from 18 yards out and Kansas City led 1-0.

Slothower, who had three saves in the game, kept the score at 1-0 when she made a one-on-one breakaway save against Montez in the 78th minute.

Hutchinson and Kansas City tied at 21 on total shots taken. The Dragons had eight shots on goal to KCK's four. Each team had nine fouls and the Dragons had five corner kicks to the Blue Devils' four.
