LIBERAL – Freshman Katharina Marx had a goal and an assist as the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team's first trip to Seward County was a successful one.

The No. 13-ranked Blue Dragons defeated the Saints, a program in its first season, 3-1 in a Jayhawk Conference battle at Liberal High School, sweeping the season series with the Saints.

Hutchinson improved to 9-1-3 overall and kept pace in the KJCCC, now 6-1-3 (21 points) in league play. Seward County fell to 1-8-2 overall and 1-8-1 (4 points) in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons play host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Marx scored her 10th goal and dished out her eighth assist of the season on Saturday to lead the Blue Dragons. She assisted on the first goal of the game and scored her goal one minute into the second half.

Maria Azevedo and Tatiana Mayumi scored the other two goals for the Blue Dragons. Emma Hoffman, Kaitlyn Edwards and Destiny Hoy were credited with assists.

The Blue Dragons dominated possession, outshooting Seward County 17-3 overall and 13-2 in shots on goal. Ten different Blue Dragon players registered at least one shot.

Hutchinson freshman goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower had to make just one save in the game. She gave up a late goal with 3 minutes to play on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Blue Dragons opened the scoring just 7:22 into the first half. Marx worked her way down the right side of the field and played a pass to a wide-open Mayumi, who smashed a shot from the top of the 18-yard box for her second goal of the season with 37:38 to play in the opening half.

The Blue Dragons converted on one of their two corner kicks for their second goal of the game. Hoffman's corner was immediately shot into the goal on a perfect header by Azevedo for her fourth goal of the season with 12:05 to play in the first half.

Hutchinson made it 3-0 just 1 minute into the second half. Hoy played a ball up the middle to Edwards, who immediately fed Marx on the right side. Marx beat Seward's keeper 1-on-1 for the goal with 44:00 to play in the second half.
