COFFEYVILLE – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team limited Coffeyville to an opponent season-low 12 points in the second half to earn a big Jayhawk Conference road victory on Saturday.
The No. 6-ranked Blue Dragons held the Red Ravens to 26.5 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers in a 58-39 Jayhawk Conference victory at Coffeyville's Nellis Hall.
Hutchinson now ties the 1989-90 and 2004-05 teams for the sixth-best start in program history at 16-0. Hutchinson is now 10-0 in conference play. The Blue Dragons play host to Barton at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Coffeyville is now 11-5 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
The 39 points allowed is an all-time series low for the Red Ravens against Hutchinson. Coffeyville's previous-low output against the Blue Dragons was 43 on January 27, 2018.
The Ravens' four points scored in the third quarter tied for an opponent low. The Blue Dragons held Coffeyville 29.5 points under its season scoring average.
Hutchinson led Coffeyville 34-27 at halftime and outscored the Red Ravens 24-12 in the second half, holding Coffeyville to 5 of 25 overall shooting with only two 3-pointers.
Sophomore Journey Armstead posted a season high for a second-straight game, scoring a game-high 17 points on 5 of 11 shooting with two 3-pointers.
Sophomore Akaysha Muggeridge posted a career-high scoring total for a second-straight game. Muggeridge tallied 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting with two 3-point goals.
Freshman Hailey Jackson finished with eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore Monae Duffy had six points and six rebounds.
The Blue Dragons were held to a season-low point total, but shot 22 of 55 overall (40.0 percent). The Dragons 8 of 29 from 3-point range and 6 of 10 from the free-throw line. The Blue Dragons were out-rebounded 38-36, but had only 14 turnovers.
Bailey Layman hit five 3-point goals, an individual opponent season high and finished with 17 points to lead the Red Ravens, who hit 7 of 23 from 3-point range. Karys Washington had eight points for the Ravens.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jackson and Muggeridge gave the Blue Dragons a 10-3 lead with 5:24 to play in the opening quarter. Those two had 3-pointers later in the period to up the Hutchinson lead to 16-7 with 1:41 to playr. Coffeyville scored the final five points of the quarter and closed within 16-12 after 10 minutes.
Two Washington free throws pulled Coffeyville within two at 16-14 with 8:31 to play in the second quarter. The Dragons went scoreless for 3:48, but a Kiki Smith inside hoop snapped that dry spell and pushed the Dragon lead to four. A Layman 3-pointer with 5:20 to play tied the game at 20-all, but the Dragons answered with a 12-4 run. Muggeridge completed a three-point play with 1:45 left in the half to give Hutchinson a 32-24 lead. The Dragons led 34-27 at halftime.
Neither team got much going offensively in the third quarter as Hutchinson outscored Coffeyville 9-4. The Dragons were 3 of 13 in the quarter and Coffeyville was just 2 of 12. Coffeyville had scoreless spells of 2:29, 3:33 and 4:31 in the second half. The Dragons lead 43-31 after three quarters.
Armstead's bucket with 7:09 to play in the fourth quarter gave Hutchinson a 47-31 lead. The lead grew to as many as 22 points in the final quarter after back-to-back Duffy baskets upped the Dragon lead to 58-36.
