Hutchinson Community College women's basketball freshman Mya Williams added one more honor to an already impressive first season's list of accomplishments with the Blue Dragons, earning first-team NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball All-America honors.
Williams, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard from Waxahachie, Texas, became just the third Blue Dragon women's basketball player to earn first-team All-America honors, the first since Kalani Purcell in 2015. Williams is the 17th All-American in Blue Dragon history.
The Blue Dragon guard put together one of the best single seasons in Blue Dragon women's basketball history, leading the Jayhawk Conference and ranking 16th in the NJCAA in scoring at 18.6 points per game.
In addition to her All-America honors, Williams amassed an impressive set of honors this season:
+ Jayhawk Conference co-Player of the Year;
+ Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year;
+ All-Jayhawk Conference/Region VI first-team selection;
+ Region VI Tournament Most Valuable Player;
+ 2022 NJCAA Tournament All-Tournament team;
+ NJCAA National Player of the Week;
+ Three-time KJCCC Player of the Week.
Williams was the leading scorer for the Blue Dragons, who finished 29-6 overall. The season included a Jayhawk Conference co-championship with Independence and the team's first Region VI Tournament Championship since 2017. The Blue Dragons advanced to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament this season.
Williams became the Blue Dragons' all-time freshman leading in scoring with 651 total points and a scoring average of 18.6 points per game. Those marks rank second and fifth, respectively, on Hutchinson's single-season charts.
Williams shot 41.9 percent overall this past season, shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line. Williams' team-high 83 3-point goals were the fourth most by a freshman and ninth most in Blue Dragon history. Her 148 made free throws were second most in freshman history and fifth most in single-season history.
Williams scored in double figures in 33 of 35 games played this season, which included 14 games of 20 or more points and two of 30 or more points.
Her single-game career high of 37 points against Colby on February 23 tied for the fifth most points scored in Blue Dragon single-game history. Her single-game high of seven 3-pointers, also against Colby on February 23, tied for the eighth most in single game history.
Williams was one of three Jayhawk Conference players to earn All-America honors. Independence guard Maisa Marcal was a third-team All-American. Coffeyville forward Faith Simpson earned honorable mention honors.
