DRAGONS TIE SINGLE-GAME MARK WITH 16 3’S, ROLL IN OPENER

Sophomore Kate Ogle posted career highs for points and 3-pointers and the No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team tied a single-game record for 3-pointers as the Blue Dragons roll to a season-opening victory in Friday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson won its 20th-straight season opener after defeating the Bethany College Junior Varsity 92-34.

The Blue Dragons nailed 16 of 30 3-point goals and tied a program single-game record for made 3-pointers, which was originally set against Neosho County on November 30, 2015 at the Sports Arena. The Dragons started the game hitting their first six attempts from beyond the 3-point line, which fueled a 22-0 start to the game over the first 7 minutes, 9 seconds.

Seven different Blue Dragons had at least one 3-pointer led by Ogle, who went a career-best 5 of 5 from 3-point range for a career-high 20 points. Ogle was 3 of 3 from long range in Hutchinson's initial first-quarter surge. She had 15 points with all five 3-pointers coming in the first half. Ogle added five rebounds and was 6 of 8 shooting overall.

Freshmen Kalyn Ervin and Ishante Suttington also had memorable Blue Dragon debuts.

Ervin finished with 17 points with three 3-pointers, five steals, four rebounds and two assists. Ervin had 12 points in the second half. Suttington was 5 of 5 overall from the floor with a pair 3-pointers in a 16-point debut.

Sophomore Nafatoumata Haidara finished with nine points, while sophomore Tor'e Alford and freshman K.K. Adams had eight points each. All nine Blue Dragons to suit up scored in the game.

The Blue Dragons shot 50.0 percent for the game (32 of 64). They were 12 of 17 from the foul line. Hutch had a 41-31 rebounding advantage. Freshman Lani Morris had a game-high eight rebounds.

The Dragons had 26 assists, led by freshman Cherrelle Newsom's and Adams' six assists each. Alford and freshman Yana Grassity had five assists each.

Hutchinson had 21 steals, led by Ervin and Alford's career-high six steals.

The Dragons held Bethany to 22.4 percent shooting (11 of 49). The Swedes started 1 for 10 from the floor. Bethany was 1 of 12 from 3-point range and 11 of 15 from the foul line. Bethany had 32 turnovers.

Ambreenique Williams had eight of her team-high 10 points in the second half. Hunter McGuire had eight points.

Hutchinson led 22-7 after the opening quarter and 41-12 at halftime. The Blue Dragons closed the first half on a 14-3 run.

An Ogle three-point play just 15 seconds into the third quarter gave the Blue Dragons their first 30-point game. Morris' inside bucket pushed the lead to 40 points for the first time (61-20) with 3:24 to play in the third quarter. The Dragons' largest lead of the game was 60 points at 85-25 and 92-32.

The Blue Dragons open Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday against the Coffeyville Red Ravens at the Sports Arena.

GAME NOTES - The Blue Dragons are now 39-8 all-time in season openers and 43-4 in home openers. … Hutchinson is now 35-0 all-time against the Bethany College Junior Varsity. … Kate Ogle's previous highs were 15 points and four 3-pointers against the Missouri Valley College JV last season as a member of the Highland Community College basketball program.
