DRAGONS RUN STREAK TO 16 WITH SWEEP OF TECH

GOODLAND – The Hutchinson Community College softball team will enter the 2019 postseason riding a 16-game winning streak after a Jayhawk Conference doubleheader sweep of Northwest Kansas Tech on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons posted a pair of mercy-rule shutouts with wins of 8-0 and 9-0.

Hutchinson closes the regular season at 26-14. The Dragons placed third in the Jayhawk East at 17-9. The Blue Dragons will open play in the 2019 Region VI Tournament on Friday, May 3 at Dodge City's Legends Park. Northwest Tech closes its season at 1-44 and 1-25. The Mavericks have lost 23 games in a row.

Leadoff hitter Taylor Ullery was a combined 6 for 8 on Wednesday with two doubles and her seventh home run of the season.

Sophomore Brynne Stockman had five hits in the doubleheader and moved into 15th place on the Blue Dragon career hits list with 111.

Three Blue Dragon pitchers – Maryssa Rollin, Madison Lewellen and Megan Davis – combined to limit Northwest Tech to seven total hits in the doubleheader as Hutchinson posted its sixth and seventh shutouts of the season.

GAME 1 RECAP
Stockman went 3 for 3 with a double, run scored and RBI to lead Hutchinson's 11-hit attack. Ullery was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Shelby Felvus went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Blue Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on back-to-back RBI singles by Caitlin Schumacher and Felvus.

Kiara DeCrane hit a solo home run in the top of the third. Then Hutch got RBI doubles from Ullery and Stockman in a four-run fourth inning.

The Dragons took an 8-0 lead when Felvus beat a throw to the plate after Alexis way grounded out to first base.

Rollin was perfect through three innings before giving up a leadoff since to start the fourth. Rollin (10-1) earned the win with four shutout innings and only two hits allowed. Rollin struck out four and walked one. Madison Lewellen closed out the fifth. She walked one, but that walk was erased by Northwest Tech was called for hitting out of order.

GAME 2 RECAP
Ullery set the offensive pace in Game 2 with a 4 for 4 performance. She had a double and home run with three runs scored and one RBI.

The Blue Dragons had three home runs. Ullery's was a solo shot in the second. Beanie Luttig returned to the lineup with a two-run home run in the first inning. Stockman hit a two-run home run in the third inning.

Ashley Wilson went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. She had a two-run single in a four-run fourth inning. DeCrane and Stockman had two hits each.

Megan Davis earned her team highs of 11 wins, ninth complete game and fourth shutout, after scattering five hits over five innings. The Mavericks loaded the bases in the fourth. She struck out Carla Rothwell to get out of the jam.

Davis struck out a career-high seven and walked only one.
