NEWTON – Shooting 4-over par in the opening round of the Grier Jones/Shocker Invitational on Monday at Sand Creek Station, the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team put together their best round of the fall season.

Led by career-low rounds of Louis Ross and David Razinskas, the Blue Dragons posted a 9-under 279 in the afternoon round to pull into a seventh-place tie with LaSalle University at 5-under 571.

The final round will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.

All four Blue Dragon golfers whose scores counted in the second-round shot under par.

After shooting a career-low 69 in the morning round, Ross shot one-stroke better in the afternoon round with a 4-under 68. Ross had five birdies and just one bogey in the second round. Ross head five birdies and two bogeys in the opening round.

Ross is the only Blue Dragon in the Top 10 through two rounds. He is tied for ninth at 7-under 137.

Razinskas had a complete turnaround on Monday. After shooting a 79 in the opening round, Razinskas rode the wave of an eagle in the par-4 fifth hole to shoot a 3-under 69. Razinskas' round consisted of the eagle, four birdies and three bogeys.

Razinskas is tied for 61st at 4-over 148.

The Blue Dragons also counted 1-under 71s in the second round from Charlie Box and Louis Galvin. The score not counted in the 279 was an even-par 72 of Micah Blowers.

Box had a pair of under-par rounds shooting 70 in the opening round and 71 in the second round. Box is tied for 17th at 3-under 141.

Blowers and Galvin are both tied for 61st at 148. Blowers had rounds of 76 and 72. Galvin had rounds of 77 and 71.

Wichita State leads the tournament through 36 holes at 20-under 556. Rice University is second at 561. UT-Rio Grande Valley is third at 281.

There is a five-way tie for first place for individual honors between Wichita State's Aston Castillo (70-65), Rice's Jay Kirchdorfer (68-67), Abilene Christian's Zane Heusel (68-67), Oklahoma State's Rayhan Thomas (68-67) and Seton Hall's Wenliag Xie (67-68) at 9-under 135.
