Hutchinson CC Sports Information

Both the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team and the Butler Grizzlies are one victory away from securing a first-round bye for the upcoming Region VI Tournament.

One team will clinch one of the four coveted spots on Friday when the No. 19 Blue Dragons take on the Grizzlies in a game postponed three times because of wintry weather.

Hutchinson travels to Butler at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the Power Plant in El Dorado.

The Blue Dragons won their third game in a row on Wednesday after going through an 11-game stretch where they were 5-6.

Hutchinson defeated Seward County 73-59 at the Sports Arena. Angelo Stuart returned to action after a three-game absence from injury with five 3-pointers and 17 points. Kaimen Lennox added 16 points.

The Blue Dragons moved into second place in the KJCCC on Wednesday and needs either one win or one Coffeyville loss to secure a top-four league placing.

Third-place Butler has won four games in a row and is 8-2 over its last 10 games after a 79-66 road win on Wednesday at Cowley. Eden Holt knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points. Former Blue Dragon player Jaden Okon had 18 points.

Hutchinson won the first meeting with the Grizzlies, 104-95 on December 4 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons were 13 of 24 from 3-point range against Butler with Stuart racking up 24 points, Nate Goodlow 19 points and Kobe Campbell and Cecil Lee adding 17 points each. Marque English had 24 points and Holt had 22 for the Grizzlies.

The Blue Dragons set an individual and team record for 3-pointers in Wednesday's victory over Seward County. Stuart surpassed Josh Gonner (2003) has the individual season record holder for 3-pointers with his 83rd of the season. The 2021-22 Blue Dragons surpassed the 1995 Blue Dragons as the team record holder. The 2022 Blue Dragons have 258 3-pointers.

The Blue Dragons close out the regular season with Butler on Friday, a make-up game at Pratt on Monday and the regular-season finale at Garden City on Wednesday.

Friday's meeting will be the 194th all-time in series history.
