BLUE DRAGONS FALL IN FOUR SETS AT GARDEN CITY

GARDEN CITY - The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team entered the final week of the regular season with a tough four-set loss to Garden City on Saturday at Conestoga Arena.

The 20th-ranked Blue Dragons had a two-match win streak snapped as Garden City defeated Hutchinson 24-26, 26-24, 22-25, 20-25, Hutchinson's first loss to Garden City since 2020.

The Blue Dragons are now 24-10 overall, 11-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons fell to third place in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson and Garden City split the 2022 season series.

Freshman Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with 19 kills. Sophomore Baylee Miller added 11 kills. Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 33 set assists. Freshman Giovanna Ravenhani had 13 assists.

Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey led the Dragon back line with 20 digs. Golden had her second double-double of the season with 15 digs. Freshman Alejandra Briseno also had 15 digs.

Freshman Anna Dean had three service aces and Golden added two aces.

Sophomore Blondie Penaflor had three solo blocks and two block assists. Dean had five block assists.

1st set: After a 2-0 start, the Blue Dragons and Broncbusters answered each other until Golden's kill triggered a 3-0 run and forced a Garden City timeout. The Blue Dragons led 10-7. Penaflor stopped a short Garden City run with a kill to make it 15-10. On the ensuing serve, Golden served up an ace to give Hutchinson a 16-10 lead, forcing another Broncbuster timeout. Following a timeout by the Blue Dragons on set point leading 24-22, the Broncbusters continued their run and scored five unanswered to steal the opening set 26-24.

2nd set: After Garden City started off the second set leading 5-0, Golden put down a kill to put the Blue Dragons on the board. Garden City led 13-5, the largest lead of the match. Down 14-7, Dean served an ace to spark the Dragons. After a kill by Garden City, Miller terminated and Serrano served an ace to cut the Garden City lead to 15-11. The run continued as Harvey tied the set at 17-all with an ace. Miller put down a kill to give the Blue Dragons the lead 18-17 as part of a 10-3 run. A service ace by Garden City tied the set at 22. Garden City set up set point after a Hutchinson attack. Tied at 24-all, Briseno's kill gave the Blue Dragons a 25-24 advantage. Blue Dragons won the wild set 26-24 after a Garden attack error.

3rd set: The Broncbusters led 12-4, which was the largest lead of the match. The Blue Dragons finally found some life when Golden snuck across a hit to the back corner of the court after a free ball from Garden City to close to gap to 15-10, Broncbusters. Garden City won the set 25-22, scoring the final three points unanswered.

4th set: Garden City took the lead out of the gate 9-5, the third straight set the Broncbusters started the set on top. Back-to-back aces and a kill by Garden City made it 12-5, Broncbusters.
