BLUE DRAGONS FALL TO BUTLER IN JAYHAWK WEST CLASH

The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team had a rough night offensively and the Butler Grizzlies took advantage in a 3-0 Jayhawk West sweep of Blue Dragons on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons lost 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 to the Grizzlies in the first of two meetings.

Hutchinson had hits four-match winning streak snapped and falls to 22-9 overall and 9-2 in the Jayhawk West. Butler improves to 18-10 overall and 9-1 in the league.

The Blue Dragons play host to Colby at 3 p.m. on Saturday for Parents Day.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit .227-.099, hitting .000 in the first set. The Dragons out-blocked Butler 8-4.

Freshman Taniya Golden had a match-high 13 kills on .258 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. She also had two solo blocks and three total blocks.

Sophomore Sophie Connor, sophomore Baylee Miller and freshman Anna Dean had five kills each.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 18 assists with a service ace and three digs. Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 11 assists.

Freshman libero Perrine Blanc had 11 digs. Miller had nine digs.

Kennedy Kelly had nine kills on .375 hitting to lead the Grizzlies.

SET 1: The Grizzlies took immediate charge of the set jumping out to a 10-3 lead, six of those points coming off Blue Dragon errors. The Dragons narrowed the gap to 15-11 on a Blondie Penaflor kill. Kelly and Carrie Roe combine for seven kills in the set and the Grizzlies won 25-17

SET 2: The second set was back and forth with five lead changes and 11 ties. The Blue Dragons led 20-17 after a Miller kill and Butler attack error. The Grizzled then ran off eight unanswered points to stun the Dragons, which were out-hit .240-.161 in the second set.

SET 3: Hutchinson trailed 17-13 after an Aven kill, but scored four straight to tie the set after a Golden kill make it 17-all. Another Golden kill tied the set at 19 and a Connor kill gave the Dragons a 21-20 lead. Butler got kills on two rallies to take the lead. Penaflor tied the set at 22-all with a kill. Trailing 24-22, the Dragons fought off one match point with a Dean kill, but Roe's kill off the block closed out the match for the Grizzlies.
