DRAGONS REACH 20-WIN MARK WITH VICTORY OVER DODGE CITY

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2017 with a tight four-set victory over the Dodge City Conquistadors on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

In a match with 17 lead changes and 37 ties over four sets, the Blue Dragons swept the season series from the Conquistadors with a 27-29, 27-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory.

The Blue Dragons improve to 20-8 overall and maintain pace in the Jayhawk West at 7-1. Dodge City fell to 14-5 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons play host to No. 12 Seward County at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Freshman outside hitter Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with 19 kills and .400 hitting percentage on 35 swings. Golden hit .500 on 15 kills in the final three sets of the match. Golden also had four total blocks (1 solo, 4 assists).

Freshman middle Anna Dean had a season-high 14 kills on .500 hitting. Dean added seven total blocks with a service ace.

Sophomore outside hitter Baylee Miller had 14 kills on .171 hitting. Miller added six digs, two blocks and two service aces.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Dodge City .234-.191 and out-blocked the Conquistadors 11-8. Each team had 48 digs.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 35 assists, six digs and an age. Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had nine assists and two kills.

Freshman libero Perrine Blanc had 14 digs. Sophomores Morgan Harvey and Sophie Connor had seven digs.

Dodge City was led by Ozge Tan's 19 kills. Martyna Kmuk had 16 kills and Oliwia Durka had 14 kills.

SET 1: Dodge City hit a match-high .239, while the Dragons hit a match-low .139. The set was tied at 9-9 when Dodge City went on a 6-1 run to take a 15-10 lead on a Tan kill. Another Tan kill upped the Conquistador lead to 20-12. The Blue Dragons then won 11 of the next 14 rallies and tied the set at 23-23. A Miller kill gave the Dragons a set point at 26-25 and a Ravenhani setter dump for a kill gave the Dragons a 27-26 lead. Dodge City won the final three points of the set. The set had 10 ties and three lead changes.

SET 2: The Dragons got off to a slow start and trailed 7-3 after one of seven attack errors in the set. A Blondie Penaflor kill knotted the set for the first time at 11-11. Dodge City then went on a 4-1 run and led 15-12 after another Dragon attack error. A Miller kill tied the set at 18. There were seven more ties from that point. A Dodge City attack error tied the set at 24-all. A Golden kill gave the Dragons a set point at 25-24. Then tied at 25-all, the last of nine kills in the set by Golden gave the Dragons a 26-25 lead and a Dodge City attack error gave the Dragons their first set of the match. The Dragons out-hit Dodge City .293-.256. There were 11 ties and five lead changes in the set.

SET 3: The third set was equally close with six lead changes and 11 ties. Neither team led by more than two points in the set. The Dragons also took advantage of 11 Dodge City attack errors. The Dragons trailed 13-11. A Dean kill tied the set at 13-all. A Golden kill gave the Dragons an 18-16 lead. Dodge City had the Dragons on the ropes leading 23-21 after a Tan kill. The Dragons scored the final four points of the set – all on Dodge City miscues – to take a 2-1 lead. The Dragons out-hit Dodge City .225-.140.

SET 4: Hutchinson raced out to leads of 4-1 and 7-3. Dodge City answered with a 7-2 run to take a 10-9 lead and a Golden kill tied the set at 10-10. Dodge City later opened up a 17-13 after a Kmuk kill. The Dragons tied the game with an 8-4 run on a Serrano service ace. Leading 23-22, a Golden kill gave the Dragon a match point. Dodge City's 31st attack error of the match was the final point of the match. The Dragons out-hit Dodge City .276-.094.
