GREAT BEND – Sophomore Blondie Penaflor put up a huge block and helped the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team rebound from a tough weekend snap an eight-match losing streak to the Barton Cougars.

Penaflor had a career-high 10 blocks, including three during a 10-3 run in the fourth set that guided the Blue Dragons a 3-1 Jayhawk Conference road victory over the Cougars, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23).

The Blue Dragons improve to 19-8 overall and 6-1 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson plays host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. Wednesday for Hutchinson's annual Dig Pink Night at the Sports Arena. Then No. 12 Seward County comes to the Sports Arena at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Barton fell to 13-4 (2-4).

Penaflor led a Blue Dragon block that out-blocked the Cougars 12-6. Freshman Ashlyn Long came off the bench to add four total blocks.

Blue Dragons also outhit the Cougars 53-50 with a .188 attack percentage. Barton was held to .157 hitting. The Blue Dragons out-dug the Cougars 79-70.

Freshman Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with 17 kills on .286 hitting. Sophomore Baylee Miller had 15 kills on .186 hitting. Freshman Anna Dean added eight kills.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano led the Blue Dragons with 37 assists, nine digs and four aces. Freshman Perrine Blanc racked up a team-high 23 digs with two service aces. Morgan Harvey finished with 17 digs and an ace.

Barton's Tasiah Nunnery led the Cougars with 12 kills on .170 hitting.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons had no problems early on as Penaflor and Golden were vital in taking the first set 25-20. Hutchinson hit .182 to Barton's .116.

SET 2: Barton shot out to a 9-6 lead that grew to 16-10. Miller notched three kills to score 3 of 4 points to give the Blue Dragons a 19-18 lead. Barton went on a 7-0 run to take the second set 25-19.

SET 3: After scoring eight straight to lead 19-14, Barton climbed back into the set with a 5-1 run to make it 20-19 with the Blue Dragons ahead. A play-of-the-night diving dig by Harvey allowed the Blue Dragons to set up Miller for a kill that landed on the baseline to make it 22-19. The Blue Dragons closed out the set and won it 25-20. The Blue Dragons had 15 kills in in the set and outhit Barton .200 to .156.

SET 4: Barton scored four straight early on, but following a Blue Dragon timeout, Dean tied the set up 9-9 with a kill. Penaflor ignited a 11-3 run with three blocks in that stretch to leap the Blue Dragons ahead 22-15 following an Ashlyn Long kill. After Barton strung together a four unanswered, Dean delivered a kill to make it 23-19. Golden unleashed a kill to end the set and match 25-23.
