BLUE DRAGONS' SEASON ENDS IN REGION SEMIS TO NO. 4 BUTLER

WICHITA – The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team dominated the second half of its Region VI Tournament semifinal match against Butler on Thursday at the Stryker Sports Complex.

But the nationally-ranked No. 4 Grizzlies used a goal in the 29th minute by Brooke Sullivan to end the No. 17 Blue Dragons' season with a 1-0 loss.

It was the Blue Dragons' first regional semifinal appearance since 2021.

The Blue Dragons outshot Butler 16-2 in the second half. Sophomore Aimee Maher had four shots on goal, including one that skimmed the post and another a minute later hitting the crossbar late in the second half.

With 11 minutes to go in regulation, sophomore Hadlie Lowe took a touch past Butler goalkeeper Kyrah Klumpp and fired a shot that was deflected by a Butler defender outside the goal for a corner kick.

Lowe had two shots on goal Thursday, and sophomore Julia Dias De Souza had a shot on goal on four shots taken. Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Quarles had four saves and one goal allowed.

Butler goalkeeper Kyrah Klumpp finished with nine saves.

Hutchinson finishes the 2022 with a 14-4 overall record. The Blue Dragons were runner-up in the Jayhawk West.

The 14 wins are the most since 2017 for the Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons are 23-15 all time in the Region VI tournament, 6-8 in the semifinal round.
