The Hutchinson Community College softball team swept the first Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week awards for the 2022 season.

Blue Dragon outfielder Haley Miller had a perfect day to earn Week 1 Division I Player of the Week honors. Freshman pitcher Riley Wertz was the Week 1 Pitcher of the week. Miller and Wertz played significant roles in the Blue Dragons' season-opening doubleheader sweep of the Ottawa University Junior Varsity on Saturday at Fun Valley.

Miller, a sophomore who played her high school ball at Buhler, had an impressive debut for the 2022 season going 6 for 6 in a doubleheader against the Ottawa University JV on Saturday.

Miller had two triples and three bunt singles in her huge day at the plate. She scored five runs and drove in four for the twin-bill. In Game 2, Miller had a career-high four hits with three runs scored and three RBIs. Miller hit .401 as a freshman.

Wertz, a freshman from Wichita, tossed two shutout innings on opening day.

Wertz struck out the side in her Blue Dragon debut in Game 1 and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in Game 2 with one strikeout.
