NEWTON – All-American Dominic Clemons won his first collegiate tournament, doing so against members of 12 of the current NJCAA Men's Division I Men's Golf national rankings.

Clemons won the 2022 NJCAA National preview by four strokes, but the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team couldn't hold its 36-hole team as the Blue Dragons finished second at Sand Creek Station.

Clemons is the second Blue Dragon in team history to win the National Preview. Ben Partridge won the Preview in 2020.

Clemons shot an even-par 72 in Wednesday's final round to finish at 8-under 208 Clemons had rounds of 69 and 67 on Tuesday. Clemons mat runner-up Mattias Lefebvre of New Mexico Junior College by four strokes to claim the individual championship.

The scoring conditions were much tougher on Wednesday with a gusty north wind at 15 to 20 mph.

The Blue Dragons shot a season-high 6-over 294 on Wednesday and finished at 3-under 861. No. 2-ranked New Mexico Junior College rallied to defeat the Blue Dragons for the team title by three strokes. The Thunderbirds shot 288 in the final round.

The Dragons counted scores from Clemons (72), Blake Saffell (73), Alex Lindstrom (72) and Louis Ross (77).

Odessa College placed third at 885. Dodge City was fourth at 886 and Western Texas was fifth at 888.

The Blue Dragons had three players finish in the Top 10.

All-American Blake Saffell finished third at 3-under 213. Saffell posted a 1-over 73 on Wednesday.

Lindstrom tied for sixth in the final standing at even-par 216.

Louis Galvin finished tied for 46th at 228. Galvin posted a final round of 79. Ross tied for 51st at 229 after closing with a 77.

The Blue Dragons had three individual players in the National Preview.

Freshman Joey Langstraat tied for 63rd with a 54-hole total of 232. Langstraat had an 86 on Saturday. Sophomore Addison Alonzo had a 79 on Wednesday and finished 65th at 233. Brooks Sauder tied for 73rd. Sauder closed with a 79 and had a 54-hole score of 237.

The Blue Dragons next compete at the Big "O" Classic on Monday and Tuesday in Elkhorn, Nebraska.
