The No. 13-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team showed some resiliency after a tough league loss on Wednesday night with a pair of sweeps on Friday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons hit .326 and had 10 service aces in a 25-18, 25-16, 26-18 Jayhawk West victory over Cloud County to open the Blue Dragon Triangular. Hutchinson then needed just 59 minutes to sweep past the Friends University junior varsity 25-8, 25-4, 25-10.

The Blue Dragons improve to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson travels to Pratt on Wednesday.

CLOUD COUNTY RECAP
Freshmen Taniya Golden and Alejandra Briseno had 11 kills each as the Blue Dragons hit better than .300 for the seventh time this season to defeat Cloud County. The Thunderbirds entered play on Friday with a sweep of Colby Wednesday.

Golden had 11 kills on .450 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons against the Thunderbirds. Briseno had 11 kills on .400 hitting.

The Blue Dragons out-hit The Thunderbirds .326-.121, had a slight 7-6 advantage in blocks and six different players accounted for 10 service aces.

Sophomore Sophie Connor had five kills and six digs. Freshman Anna Dean had five kills and four blocks.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano finished with 22 assists and eight digs. Freshman Giovanna Ravenhani had 14 assists. Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey had 11 digs.

Kenzie Cooper had nine kills to lead Cloud County.

A 6-0 run gave Cloud County a 6-3 lead and forced an early timeout by the Blue Dragons. The Thunderbirds maintained an 11-7 lead before the Dragons came to life offensively. A Dean kill and two Ravenhani aces were part of a 5-0 run that gave the Dragons a 12-11 lead. Down 16-15, Hutchinson closed the set on a 9-3 run. Briseno had six kills and Harvey had back-to-back aces during the run as Hutchinson pulled away for a 25-18 win.

The Dragons used a 9-2 run to erase a small deficit in the second set and turn it around for a 16-9 lead. A Golden kill upped the Dragon lead to 18-11. Cloud County scored on three-consecutive rallies to pull within four, but the Dragons finished the set on a 7-2 run. The Blue Dragons hit a match-high .412 in the set, holding Cloud County to .036 hitting.

Hutchinson started the third set with a 9-1 run – Serrano had three aces and Briseno hammered down an over-pass to close the run. After a Baylee Miller kill, Hutchinson led 13-4. Cloud County pulled within 13-8 and 17-13. The Dragons hit .294 on 17 kills in the third set, closing out the match with a 3-0 run.

FRIENDS JV RECAP
The Blue Dragons hit a season-high .528 against the Falcons in Hutchinson's sixth match sweep of the season. Hutchinson also held Friends to a season-low -.245, holding the Falcons to nine kills with 18 attack errors.

The four points allowed in the second set were the second-fewest allowed in the rally score era (2001). The fewest points the Dragons have allowed in a single set was three against Garden City in 2009.

The Blue Dragons tied a season high with 13 service aces. Andrea Serrano, Kaitlin Yoder and Cydney Carter had four aces each.

Dean led the Blue Dragons with 10 kills on .529 hitting. Sophomore Blondie Penaflor hit .800 on eight kills and 10 attacks. Freshman Samantha Saunders had six kills on .600 hitting with a match-high 10 digs. Freshman Perline Fery had five kills on .357 hitting.

Yoder had a season-high 16 assists. Serrano had 14 assists.

The Blue Dragons started the match with a 14-2 run. After a Penaflor solo block, Hutch's lead was 17-3. The Dragons hit .545 in the set and held the Falcons to -.238 hitting and cruised to a 25-8 victory.

Friends hit a -.150 and had just two kills in the second set. The Dragons had runs of 7-1 and 9-1 and scored the final nine points of the set to win 25-4.

Back-to-back Saunders' kills helped Hutchinson open an 11-2 lead. Leading 14-8, the Dragons hit .593 on 16 kills and closed the match on an 11-2 run.
