DRAGONS FALL IN 4 SETS AT SEWARD COUNTY

LIBERAL – Freshman Taniya Golden had a career-high 20 kills, but the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team saw its 10-match winning streak come to an end with a four-set Jayhawk West loss at Seward County in a nationally ranked matchup.

The No. 13 Blue Dragons won the first set, but struggled the rest of the match in a 25-22, 19-25, 25-27, 20-25 loss to the No. 17 Saints at the Greenhouse.

Hutchinson falls to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons return home on Friday for a triangular with Cloud County and the Friends University JV at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons hit .333 in the opening set, but only .155 over the final three set. The Blue Dragons were out-blocked by the Saints 14-8.

Golden led the Blue Dragons with 20 kills on .393 hitting.

Freshman Alejandra Briseno had 12 kills on just .105 hitting. She had four of Hutchinson's seven service aces. Freshman Anna Dean had five of her eight kills in the opening set.

Sophomore middle Blondie Penaflor had six total blocks, including one solo block. Baylee Miller had four blocks.

Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 22 assists. Sophomore Andrea Serrano had 16 assists. Sophomore Morgan Harvey had a team-high 10 digs. Freshman Perrine Blanc had six digs.

Seward County hit .385 for the match with Seyun Park leading the Saints with 15 kills, all 15 kills in the final three sets.

The Blue Dragons served strong in the opening set with five aces and the Blue Dragons had six kills on Saints overpasses. Dean had five kills and Golden had four kills in the set. The Blue Dragons took a 15-10 lead on a Dean kill. The Saints eventually tied the set at 20, but a Dean kill and Ravenhani ace started a 5-2 Blue Dragon run, closing out a 25-22 win with a Briseno ace.

Hutchinson trailed the second set 10-9, but the Saints scored five in a row and eight of the next 10 rallies to build an 18-11 lead. A Golden kill cut the Dragons within 20-18, but the Saints scored 5 of the final 6 points to close out the set and tie the match at 1-1.

Four early kills by Briseno got the Blue Dragons out to a 10-3 lead in the third set. A Golden kill gave the Dragons a 13-6 lead. The Saints roared back into the set with a 12-4 run to take an 18-17 lead. The lead changed hands four different times from that point. A Penaflor kill gave the Dragons a 22-21 lead. Seward scored the next three points and had a pair of set points in hand. A Golden kill and Penaflor solo block tied the set at 24-all. A Miller kill tied the set at 25, but the Saints scored the final two points for a 27-25 win.

After three early ties in the fourth set, Seward County built a 6-3 lead and the Dragons never could get the lead back. Trailing 12-9, the Dragons scored three in a row to tie the set. Seward answered with a 4-1 run. A Golden kills pulled the Dragons within 20-19, but the Saints scored 6 of the match's final 7 points to close out the Dragons.
