Just a little more than 48 hours after completing a day of back-to-back victories over the Nos. 3 and 1 teams in the nation on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team opened the home season with three wins at the Blue Dragon Quad on Monday night.

The Blue Dragons improved their record to 5-2 with a pair of sweeps and a four-set victory at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson opened on Monday with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-15 victory over the Ottawa University JV. The Blue Dragons then dominated sets 2 and 3 against Neosho County in a 25-22, 25-10, 25-17 victory over the Panthers. The Dragons dropped the second set to the Bethel College JV, but notched a fifth-straight win with a 25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 25-9 victory over the Threshers.

The Blue Dragons open Jayhawk West play on Wednesday at Dodge City and then travel to the TJC Classic on Friday and Saturday in Trinidad, Colorado.

OTTAWA JV RECAP
The Blue Dragons used a balanced offensive attack and another strong effort from the service line to sweep the Braves, which went 1-2 in the Blue Dragon Quad.

Freshman Alejandra Briseno led Hutchinson with 10 kills and a service ace. She had four kills in each of the first two sets.

Freshman Taniya Golden finished with seven kills. Freshman Perline Fery came off the bench in the third set to notch all five of her kills.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Ottawa 38-28 and had four total blocks and 11 service aces.

Six different Hutchinson players recorded at least one ace led by Perrine Blanc with three aces. Morgan Harvey, Andrea Serrano and Cydney Carter had two aces each.

Serrano finished with 23 assists and freshman Giovanna Ravanhanni had 13 assists.

Blanc led the Dragons with 10 digs and Serrano added eight digs.

The Blue Dragons led the opening set 9-6 when an Anna Dean kill ignited a 13-1 run, which was capped by a Harvey back-row kill for a 22-8 lead.

The second set was tight throughout. The Braves pulled within two points twice at 20-18 and 23-21. The Dragons closed out the set with a Chloe Conway kill and a Conway/Harvey double block on set point.

Leading the third set 10-8, the Dragons used a 5-1 run that was capped by a Blondie Penaflor kill and solo block to build a 15-9 lead. From that point the Dragons continued to pull away, reaching match point with back-to-back Carter service aces for a 24-15 lead. Penaflor and Serrano posted a double block on match point.

NEOSHO COUNTY RECAP
The Blue Dragons' freshman duo of Briseno and Golden combined for 27 kills to lead the Blue Dragons to a sweep of Jayhawk East foe Neosho County in the second match on Monday night.

Briseno had season highs with 15 kills, three total blocks and three service aces. Briseno had six kills in the first set, five in the second and four more in the third set.

Golden pounded down 12 kills to help Hutchinson out-hit Neosho County 49-24. The Blue Dragons also had 8.5 team blocks and eight service aces.

Dean finished with four kills and four total blocks. Miller added four kills.

Serrano finished with 24 assists and three service aces. Ravanhanni had 15 assists. Blanc led the Dragons with eight digs.

Briseno and Golden combined for 10 of the Dragons' 16 kills in the first set. Briseno had back-to-back aces to erase a two-point deficit and give the Dragons an early 4-3 lead. Hutchinson didn't relinquish the lead from that point, but the Panthers kept it close. Leading 14-12, Hutch went on a small 4-1 run to create some cushion. A Briseno kill gave the Dragons a 20-15 lead. The Panthers pulled with 21-19, but the Dragons and Panthers sided out on the final seven points of the set.

Leading the second set 8-4, the Blue Dragons exploded for a 13-3 run that was capped by consecutive Briseno kills for a 21-7 lead. Two more Briseno kills and a Golden kill on the final three rallies of the set gave the Dragons their largest set win of the early season.

With the third set tied at 11, a Briseno/Conway double block started a decisive 6-0 Dragon run. The Dragons took advantage of eight Neosho County attack errors in the set to close the match in a sweep.

BETHEL JV RECAP
The Blue Dragons had a season-high 14 service aces, but had to overcome 24 attack errors and eight service errors in a four-set win over the Bethel JV.

Hutchinson hit .270 in the three set wins, but hit .000 with 13 kills and 13 attack errors in a 25-22 loss in set No. 2

Five different Blue Dragons had eight or more kills. Six different Hutchinson players had services aces, led by Blanc's season-high six aces.

Offensively, Golden had a match-high 12 kills to pace the Blue Dragons. Briseno had nine kills, while Baylee Miller, Connor and Dean had eight kills each.

Penaflor led the Dragons with four total blocks, including one solo block. Serrano finished with 43 assists. Blanc had eight digs.
