Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College volleyball team plays its home and conference opener Wednesday night when the Barton Cougars come to the Sports Arena for a 6:30 p.m. first serve.

The match will be videostreamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 6:25 p.m.

The Blue Dragons enter the 2018 home and Jayhawk West opener with a 1-3 record after four matches at the New Mexico Military Invitational in Roswell, New Mexico. Two of the losses were to the Nos. 5 and 11 teams in the nation in the preseason rankings.

Barton is 1-4 overall, but owns the only Jayhawk West win of the season after the Cougars defeated Dodge City in their conference opener on Monday night. Barton won that match in a sweep.

The Blue Dragons look for their 21st consecutive home-opening victory, a streak that dates back to 1997.

Blue Dragon head coach Patrick Hall knew there would be growing pains with the 2018 Blue Dragons. Hutch's .144 team hitting average is a result of 36 service reception errors in 16 sets played last weekend.

Only freshman Tara Davis hit better than .200 with a .409 attack percentage on 21 kills and 44 swings. Freshman Eden Hiebert had a team-high 32 kills, a team-leading average of 2.29 kills per set.

The Blue Dragons did serve tough with 20 aces over the weekend. Hiebert and Raychel Reed had four aces each to lead the Dragons.

Sophomore setter Cassidy Crites had her first two career double-doubles on Friday to lead the Dragons offensively. She averages 4.31 assists and sophomore Payton Gawith added 2.86 assists per set.

The Cougars come into Wednesday's match hitting .110 on 8.47 kills per set. Barton has six players averaging between 1 and 2 kills per set.

After Wednesday, the Blue Dragons will continue conference play on Monday in a 6:30 p.m. match at Pratt.
