The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team hopes to defend its home court this week with a pair of big KJCCC matchups at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragon (17-5, still receiving votes in the NJCAA rankings) play host to the Cowley Tigers (12-10) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons are 11-0 at the Sports Arena this season.

The Dragons are one of seven teams battling for the third and fourth seeds in the Region VI Tournament next month. Seeds 1 through 4 receive an opening-round bye.

Hutchinson and Coffeyville are tied for fourth with 11-5 record, just 0.5 games behind Barton for third place. Seward County (9-7), Cloud County (8-7), Cowley (7-9) and Independence (7-9) are well within striking distance with eight games remaining in the season.

The Blue Dragons had their seven-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 78-74 road loss at then-No. 17 Barton. The Dragons nearly came all the way back from a 21-point third-quarter deficit, pulling within one possession on three different occasions.

Freshman Monae Duffy scored 16 points, while sophomores Mya Williams Morgan Browning had 13 points each. The Blue Dragons trailed 50-36 as Barton shot 70 percent in the opening half.

The Tigers come into the game riding a two-game winning streak after victories over Barton and Northwest Tech. Against Barton, Cowley knocked down 13 3-pointers and against Northwest Tech, super-sophomore Baylee Fincher hit four treys and finished with 22 points.

Fincher had three 3-pointers and a game-high 17 points to lead Cowley to a 55-49 victory over the Blue Dragons on November 30 at Scott Auditorium in Arkansas City. The Blue Dragons were in the midst of a first-semester scoring slump and was held to 35.6 percent shooting and just 3 of 21 from 3-point range. Duffy led the Dragons with 14 points.

Wednesday's game features 2 of the top 4 all-time winning coaches in KJCCC history. Blue Dragon head coach John Ontjes is second with 440 wins. Cowley's Todd Clark is fourth with 425 wins.
