The Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team opened the 2022 season with a 10th-place performance at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Thursday night at Fun Valley.

The men's results weren't made official until early Friday morning.

Led by freshman Douwe Bentsink, the Blue Dragons finished 10th out of 19 teams with 258 team points.

Northwest Tech edged Fort Hays State for the men's team title 48-50. Cowley finished third with 108 points.

Bentsink placed 28th overall in the 191-runner event. He posted a time of 21:32.23 over the four-mile course.

Sophomore Carsyn Turpin, the Blue Dragons' lone returnee from last year, placed 43rd with a time of 21:56.18. That's a 59-second improvement from his freshman Masterson time.

Freshman Hayden Keller was the third Blue Dragon to cross the finish line, placing 81st in 23:18.19. Freshman Evan Avitia placed 86th in 23:20.72. Freshman Martin Marquez was the fifth runner to figure in the scoring. He placed 94th in 23:37.43.

Butler's Roger Rotich set a course record in winning the 2022 Masterson men's individual title with a mark of 19:11.78. Runner-up Kidus Misgina of Cloud County also broke the course record with a time of 19:21.43. The top six times on Thursday were all Top-25 times in Masterson history.

The Blue Dragons will next run at the Woody Greeno Classic on Saturday, September 17 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
