IOLA - Hutchinson Community College sophomore Teagan Flanagan wasn't going to be denied on Saturday at the Red Devil Invitational.

Flanagan held leads in his first two races of the 2020 season only to finish second twice. The Kingman High School product left nothing to chance on Saturday and became the first Blue Dragon men's cross country runner to win a race since Andrew Kibet won the 2018 NJCAA Men's Division I National Championship.

Flanagan led a group of four Hutchinson Top 20 finishes, two in the Top 10, and helped the No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons to a second-straight team runner-up finish this season. The Blue Dragons had 53 team points to Allen's 32. Butler was third in the men's team standings with 80 points.

Back on September 4 at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic, Flanagan had the lead well into the third lap of the four-lap, four-mile race. Flanagan admitted he went out too fast and faded, finishing second to Cloud County's Habatu Geta. Then two weeks ago while dueling Fort Scott's Gudisa Adnow at the Muthama-Rogers Invitational, Flanagan had a lead, but tripped in a gopher hole with about a half-mile to go and he couldn't recover, only to finish second again.

Running his first 8,000-meter race of the season on Saturday, Flanagan took charge and defeated Adnow by 22.78 seconds.

Flanagan posted a time of 25:07.00, the 11th-fastest 8K time in Blue Dragon history.

Running his first career 8K race, sophomore Andrew Holt produced a strong result for the Blue Dragons for a second-straight week with a ninth-place finish. Holt's time was 27:05.44.

Sophomore Jacob Mcelhanon finished 14th for Hutchinson with a time of 27:16.09. Sophomore Matthew Schrag was 18th with a time of 27:47.99.

Freshman Cameron Delaney placed 25th in a time of 28:18.93. Freshman Aaron Geissinger was 31st in a time of 28:46.32. Freshman Jarreth Carrasco was 61st in a time of 34.39.30.

Hutchinson has a short week before competing in the Bethel Invitational at 5:45 p.m. on Friday at Bethel College in North Newton.
