GARDEN CITY – Freshmen Connor Kaufman and Jared Stark led the Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team to a sixth-place finish on Monday in the 2017 Region VI Cross Country Championships at Buffalo Dunes Country Club.

The Blue Dragons wound up third in the Jayhawk West team standings behind Colby and Cloud County as Kaufman and Stark finished in the Top 10 of the conference.

The Dragons finished with 137 team points in the Region VI team standings averaging 28 minutes, 4 seconds per runner. Allen won the team championship with 50 points and Colby was Region VI runner-up at 91 points. Colby won the conference title with 38 points, followed by Cloud County with 60 and Hutchinson with 65.

Kaufman posted a time of 27 minutes, 18.4 seconds to finish 15th in the region and earn first-team all-Jayhawk West honors with a fifth-place finish in the conference.

Stark was next across the finish like to place 16th in the region and sixth in the league with a time of 27:28.1

Freshman Grant Clothier was 33rd in the region and 16th in the Jayhawk West after running a time of 28:25.4 Sophomore Jeremy Stiebens ran 28:27.2 to finish 36th in the region and 19th in the league.

Four consecutive Blue Dragons then crossed the finish line consecutively.

Freshman Kade Gerlach ran a time of 28:38.5 to finish 39th overall. Myles Hansen was next at 28:38.9, Gavin Alexander was next in 28:39.3 and Alec Perrone was 42nd at 25:41.5. Those four placed 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th, respectively in the league.

Tony Ibarra was 52nd in a time of 29:10.7. That was 29th in the league.

The Blue Dragons next compete at the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Fort Dodge, Iowa on Saturday, November 11.
