NEWTON – All-Americans Dominic Clemons and Blake Saffell shot a combined 12-under-par to stake the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team to a three-stroke lead entering Wednesday's final round of the NJCAA National Preview at Sand Creek Station.

The Blue Dragons shot a 9-under 567 in the first two rounds on Tuesday. The Blue Dragons led by six strokes after an opening-round 282. The lead was trimmed to three strokes after 36 holes after an afternoon-round 285.

The Blue Dragons lead No. 2 New Mexico Junior College by three strokes after the Thunderbirds posted a 570 (288-282) on Tuesday. Odessa College shot a tournament-low 274 in the second round and trails by seven strokes at 574.

The NJCAA National Preview, played at the site of the 2023 NJCAA Men's Division I National Championships in May 2023, has seven of the Top 10 and 12 of the Top 20 teams in the field of 15 teams.

Clemons is the top individual golfer through 36 holes and Saffell is tied for second.

Clemons was even through the first 10 holes of Round 1. He then birdied No. 11 and had an eagle on the par-5, 525-yard 16th hole to finish with a 3-under 69. Clemons played the front nine of the second round in 5-under par and he remained 5-under at the end of the round for a 67.

Clemons takes a four-stroke lead into Wednesday's final round at 8-under 136.

Saffell is part of a three-way tie for second at 4-under 140. Saffell birdied Nos. 16 and 18 to finish the opening round at 4-under 68 to lead the tournament. After a bogey on No. 17 in the second round, Saffell rebounded to birdie No. 18 and finish with a 72.

Saffell is tied with Odessa's Alexander Topgaard and New Mexico's Timothy Chan at 140.

Nineteen golfers shot even or under par on Tuesday.

One of those players is Blue Dragon freshman Alex Lindstrom, who rebounded from an opening-round 74 with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon round. Even through 15 holes in the second round, Lindstrom finished strong with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to finish at 2-under 70 for the round.

Freshmen Louis Galvin is tied for 39th at 149 (73-76) and Louis Ross is tied for 53rd at 152 (72-80).

The Blue Dragons have three individual players.

Freshman Joey Langstraat is tied for 23rd at 146. He opened with a 1-under 71 and shot a 75 in the second round.

Sophomore Addison Alonzo is tied for 67th after a 154 (78-76).

Freshman Brooks Sauder is tied for 76th at 158 (78-80).

The final round is a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
