Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Allen Red Devils earned a win at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Saturday for the first time since 2007.
The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team will try to keep the Kansas City Blue Devils from their first-ever victory at the Blue Dragons' famed home on Wednesday night.
The Blue Dragons (12-2) will play host to the Blue Devils (5-9) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Hutchinson's final non-conference battle of the regular season.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:20 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (analyst) calling the action. The game will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 7:20 p.m.
Still a member of the Jayhawk Conference, Kansas City is a Division II program in men's basketball.
The Blue Dragons have their first of two conference off games on Wednesday, but with the Dragons only one game removed from a 24-day holiday break, head coach Steve Eck inked KCK as an opponent.
This will be a key game to get the Blue Dragons back on track after last Saturday's 87-80 loss to now No. 23 Allen. The loss cost the Blue Dragons the outright lead in the Jayhawk West and seven spots in the NJCAA rankings - Hutch is now No. 12.
Hutchinson on Saturday goes on the road for a nationally ranked test against No. 20 Cowley in Arkansas City. After that, the Blue Dragons enter the 14-game Jayhawk West marathon with Northwest Tech on Monday, January 13 at the Sports Arena.
There were some bright spots for the Blue Dragons this past Saturday. Freshman forward Majok Kuath had his first Hutchinson double-double with career highs of 29 points and 15 rebounds against Allen.
The downside was the Blue Dragons had their worst defensive game of the season as Allen became the first time this season to shoot 50 percent or better against the fifth-best defensive team in the KJCCC. Allen forward Malik Hardmon had a huge game with 39 points on 16 of 20 shooting.
The Blue Dragons will face a Kansas City team in a transition season with a new head coach, Brandon Burgette.
The Blue Devils are 5-9 overall and started the season 1-8. Since that tough start, KCK has won 4 of 6, including an 87-74 home win over Division I State Fair on December 10. This will be Kansas City's first game back from the holiday break.
Hutchinson head coach Steve Eck is still two victories shy of becoming the first Blue Dragon coach and fifth ever in the Jayhawk Conference to win 300 games at one school.
