A nightmarish third quarter put the Hutchinson Community College football team in a hole too large to climb out of on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

But the Blue Dragons made it interesting at the end.

Trailing by 19 points with 10:34 to go in the fourth quarter, the Blue Dragons scored two quick touchdowns and had another possession for a potential game-winning drive, but the Fort Scott Greyhounds held on and upset No. 20 Hutchinson 29-24 at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons fall for the third-straight game and drops to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. Fort Scott improves to 4-5 and 2-4 in the league.

After Fort Scott took a 29-10 lead on Braxton Curry's 44-yard touchdown reception with 10:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, the slumbering Blue Dragon offense finally started to product.

Marcus Edwards returned the ensuing kickoff 31 yards to the Hutch 47. The Dragons marched the rest of the distance in eight plays and scored on Jaylen Erwin's 4-yard touchdown reception from Eric Forrest to pull the Dragons within 29-17 with 6:47 to play.

Fort Scott's next drive advanced to the Dragon 23. The Greyhounds were trying a 41-yard field goal, which was blocked by Quen Head and Jerry Jacobs returned the ball to the Fort Scott 21. One play later, Forrest hit Tavian Allen for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 29-24 with 3:09 to go.

The Blue Dragons got a defensive stop and had the ball at their own 13 with 1:41 to play, but the Dragons were unable to get a first down.

The fourth-quarter rally was needed after Fort Scott erased a 10-7 halftime deficit with a 15-point quarter.

A bad shotgun snap was recovered by Forrest in the end zone for a Fort Scott safety. Hutch's lead was down to 10-9 with 11:03 to go. Fort Scott took the free kick and went on a two-play, 57-yard scoring drive capped off by Jaylan Jenkins' 44-yard touchdown catch. The Hounds went for two and missed and led the Blue Dragons 15-10 with 10:27 remaining in the third.

The hole got bigger for the Dragons when Raekwon Morgan returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown and Fort Scott led 22-10 with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.

Another Blue Dragon interception – Fort Scott had three interceptions in the game – led to Curry's fourth-quarter touchdown. Fort Scott scored 22 unanswered points in a span of 15 minutes, 32 seconds to lead 29-10 with 10:34 to play.

Hutchinson was out-gained by Fort Scott 302-300. The Dragons had 218 passing yards and only 82 rushing yards. Fort Scott had 276 passing yards and only 26 rushing yards. Fort Scott scored 14 points off Blue Dragon turnovers.

Forrest led the Dragons with 218 passing yards on 19 of 32 passing with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He was sacked five times.

Jaylen Erwin had five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Allen Bishop had four catches for 28 yards.

B.J. Emmons was Hutchinson's leading rusher with 62 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Otis Williams had 36 yards on eight carries.

Fort Scott quarterback Dalton Sneed completed 23 of 43 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns. Edward Aldred had nine receptions for 93 yards. Kyle Harrison made seven catches for 62 yards and a score.

The first 20 minutes were scoreless. Fort Scott scored first on Harrison's 6-yard touchdown catch from Sneed. The Dragons responded with an eight-play, 86-yard scoring drive capped by a tremendous spin move by Emmons, who scored from 2 yards out to tie the game.

The Dragosn took their only lead of the game with 28 seconds to play in the first half. After a Williams' 27-yard run and Brendan Brenner 13-yard catch, Jose Parga attempted his first career field goal and nailed a 43-yarder to give the Dragons a 10-7 lead at halftime.

The Blue Dragons will play at Dodge City at 1 p.m. next Saturday to close out the regular season.

GAME NOTES – Fort Scott snaps a seven-game losing streak to the Blue Dragons. … Hutchinson is now 40-33-1 all-time against Fort Scott, 20-15-1 at Gowans Stadium. … Jaylen Erwin's five receptions and 73 receiving yards were both season highs.
